The 40 year plan by Reaganites and shitheels like The Heritage Foundation have finally born fruit. It's simple, if a Republican is ever elected president again, this bastion of democracy will end. If it's the current one, we'll be looking at something close to Stalinism as his brain further rots into fear, paranoia, and solipsism.
The only silver lining i see now is in the post "dog catches car" scenario. See what actually happens when their laws and policies are put into place. We are already seeing that with the overturning of Roe when it comes to Democratic response.
Jesus Democrats we need less speechifying and more action. Durbin and also Biden honestly are whistling past the graveyard. We are in an existential crisis and the best they can come up with is a series of impotent speeches and feckless tweets? FFS
These radical SCOTUS decisions are wearing me out. I’ve reached a point where the simplified truth is Trump must lose and as many “conservatives” as possible must be unelected in November. SCOTUS made what is tantamount to a “conservative” declaration of war on the Constitution by providing a liability free roadmap for a presidential coup in its immunity decision. If Trump wins it’s game over.
So, I’m working to wake the sleepers. More of them are needed as voters to win the day in November. It would be great if Biden exercised some of his new powers, but it’s unlikely he will. Too much of a change after decades in the before yesterday mode.
The six criminally minded on the Shady Court Ruled by Oligarchs of the Unfortunate States (SCROTUS) are working their damndest to fluff Trumpenfurher. Rational minds have to vote Blue to make sure he stays flaccid.
Remember this is the court that found the "insurrection clause" of the 14th Amendment does not apply, even though it is in the plain text of the document, but now apparently immunity from criminal acts shields presidents, with footnote citations to the thing they pulled out of their asses.
This is a Corut run amok, absolutely lawless, and it's time every Democrat from Biden on down didn't just deplore a particular ruling, but called out the Court itself in the most scathing language. And openly discuss adding seats, or refusing to adhere to its rulings, or whatever other options remain.
"I dissent"--yes, sounds nice, but it's a statement of honorable capitulation, and an implicit acknowledgement of the Court's legitimacy. It has no place here.
The same court that told us not to worry, they will never overturn Roe. Is also telling us not to worry, the immunity powers they just granted the President will never be abused.
>> "dictators are sometimes popular. Leaving this to the voters can result in a scenario where a president is punished more for raising taxes than executing dissidents." <<
Everyone should be appalled at this, and most of us should be afraid of this. There was a time when white trans people were playing on an unlevel field but at least escaped the direct targeting which the white powerful focussed on the Black marginalized. Or could escape, if we were careful enough with our expressive choices.
It was a terrible time, but there was also a sense of control, a sense that one had the ability to evade the weighty blow of a gavel. At a cost, of course. There was a sacrifice to be made, a sacrifice of honesty and dignity and integrity, but the appeal of personal control is strong and many of us remained closeted, tailoring our clothing choices to what fit in our confined space.
But there is no return to that time. Whether every trans person is out, the trans community has left the closet and taken to the streets. And now the eye is on us. Some imagine the panopticon as the surveillance state, but more than security cameras and big brother, the panopticon is the focussed eyes of One Million Moms, of Moms for Liberty, of your next door Gladys Kravitz screaming for Abner the Enforcer.
It will be multiple generations, if ever, before trans people's lives are no longer a regulatory concern of the state, before trans lives are no longer a target.
Lebians know this as well, and other bi, pan and queer women. The men who are anything but straight. We should all know this, we *do* all know this: the majority is happy to target us. They pay little attention to the ups and downs of their own taxes so long as they are assured that money to the government is down. It is always sufficient that government funding for the undesirables is drying up faster than their retirement account.
And so *of course* they'll celebrate the murder of dissidents, so long as they don't have to track the blood onto their own carpets, so long as the killings happen *over there* where the bad people live. Democracy has always been vulnerable to this. We voted in torture and murder, kidnapping and slavery when we first adopted the Articles of Confederation and did so many times after, until the blood of the civil war was splattered inside white homes. *Of course* we'll do this again, or try to. *Of course* the ballot box is insufficient. Distrust of democracy's capacity for self-limitation was evident from the start of the American slavery experiment, that distrust was written into our Constitution before it could be ratified, of greater primacy even than the freedoms of religion and speech and assembly that rapidly followed.
You're correct, SER. This is how far the right wing members of SCOTUS have strayed from the constitution. Should Trump win this November 5th, the election will be remembered for burning down the country. But the conflagration will only have been possible by the gunpowder the court wrongly but Wrightly delivered to Trump.
This is my sentiment exactly! Of course, I'll vote for the Democratic party. But, damn, we're STILL being fed thin gruel.
A lot of folks are thinking about leaving. That's fine, do what you think is the best but I've noticed increasing fascism in The Netherlands, France, Italy, Germany and several Scandinavian countries. It's very clear that corporate oligarchs are running the world. Jeffrey Epstein was a guide (if you will) about how the world works. There are a lot of rogues like him (Leonard Leo, etc) and if 4 years with Democratic control of Congress and The White House (for part of it ) hasn't fixed anything - what will?!
Well time to start sharing Democratic surrogate and Biden videos and see where people stand. I suppose people can be fired up but really our best play at this point is to defeat as many Republicans as possible everywhere.
Everything you care about in your life now depends on the Biden/Harris admin continuing, as there is even more damage to come from the gutting of Chevron. The modern Taney Court is embracing a new Gilded Age after all, and at thus point everything is on the table. Everything.
I wanted to be a bit of a bright spot in the morning so I sent in the annual fee via PayPal. Your writing always makes me a little stronger than I was before, thanks for the column.
The democratic party elite are cowards. They have been ever since I can recall.
Maybe Dick Durbin can get up off his ass and do something. Anything.

Thanks for the bright spot in a dreary day.

What are we waiting for guys? Biden is now a whole branch of government, Schumer a half a branch, and we have a third of SCOTUS!

ok comradeski
He's an idiot. Block him.
I did a long time ago but in substack he's still visible.
BRAVO.

No doubt about it. This ruling is fecked!

You could knock me over with a feather.
“Clarence Thomas’s speedo“ Really, Stephen?!

Re: The Thing’s Liz Cheney/“treason” post:
Where’s Dick Cheney when you really need him?
Hopefully talking to his CIA buddies?
