I had to unfriend someone the other day for a racist FB post which I won't detail here, except to note that while it was targeting a different group, it ended with the exact same, panicky "... far worse than anyone imagined."
I went to UT Austin in the 70s and 80s, and I’m saddened to see that the university’s Black student population is still in the low single digits. Populations aren’t distributed equally across a state, and in a state with the land mass of Texas this is significant. While the Hill Country has its German and Polish peoples, and West & South Texas its native and Hispanic communities, Black populations are concentrated in East Texas. State school applicants tend to come from families of modest means, so tend to look at colleges a reasonable car or bus drive from home. I’ve always thought the UT-Austin Black student population should be much larger than it is, and to hear that it hasn’t speaks volumes about the quality of primary and secondary education being delivered to Black families in Texas. But then, the powerful textbook committee has been dominated by virulent racists for decades, focused on stunting growth and opportunity for children who do not look like theirs. The South never lost in the minds of Texans.
They feel very comfortable being open about their racism. And that's why they have made Texas into an unreconstructed state-based regime of terror.
That's why Governor Abbottoir was so comfortable pivoting from something so nakedly vile and racist, parlaying it into exactly WHY there is so much focus on immigration by that regime.
I'd love a world where bigots weren't so comfortable. But the racism and the attendant sadopopulism give them the keys to the kingdom.
I went to high school in Austin, where it was just assumed UT Austin was your top school, and I had a TON of Indian-American friends, including my childhood best friend who is a UT alumna. Looking at that picture I would have assumed the majority of those guys were born here, grew up here, have spent their entire lives rooting for UT.
The assumption is because racial minorities in America do not get the "presumption of belonging." That's why I as a Black man descended from slaves will, in certain areas, have my presence questioned...and even might be asked to show ID just for visiting a public place or accommodation.
