Thanks for writing this, Stephen. I kinda got Cap when I was a kid, but it was the movies that really got me to see what a powerful character he is.

To be fair, being white definitely helps Steve avoid getting shot or arrested by the police for wearing a mask, punching people in the face, and carrying a shield around.

Thank you for teaching me something - about the powerful story of Captain America - I didn’t know. I really appreciate it.

The first date movie my wife and I saw when we were dating was Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

Sometimes you have to retreat, in order to live to fight another day, or allow others to live to fight another day. Strategic retreats can be used in war - with some you lose the battle, but win the war, but some allow you to win the battle (General Daniel Morgan and the Battle of Cowpens). A retreat is not the same as a surrender.

You are right about never surrendering - that is not an option when the other side is pure evil, and in this case, stupid and insecure. It's far better to go down fighting than to give in to evil and lose your soul. Finally, "I was just following orders" wasn't a valid excuse at Nuremberg. The "good" Germans "just following orders" were found guilty and hanged or imprisoned for life.

Steve Rogers and Sam Wilson were heroes long before they joined the military. Their commitment to what is right versus what is ordered is inspirational.

The noblest American of them all, that’s him. I’d heard that quote about Germany elsewhere, and I didn’t quite believe it until MAGA came.

Please don't put it that way. A near majority of those who actually VOTED did this, and that majority was a mere 2 percent, give or take tenths of a percent. Only two-thirds of registered voters actually cast a vote, so that drops it down to only 30% of all registered voters got this monstrosity back in office. I've been arguing with people allll over the place that the almost-majority of Americans did NOT vote this guy into office. And, as the following linked article explains, it seems pretty clear that without GOP voter suppression, Harris would right now be leading us into a bright future. How many of those tossed votes were for Harris? I'm gonna say "lots."

Well I had zero idea that I needed an essay about Captain America this morning but I sure did. Thank you Mr Robinson as always.

I've never been a comic book reader, but so many of my friends who are respect Cap for the same reasons so he's become one of my favorites. Just in terms of symbolism I think it's so important that he carries a shield. He's America the defender. That's the story I grew up with and it's the one I will fight for every day of my life, even if it's in a much more humble way than punching Nazis.
