The funny thing is Colbert is relatively tame—it would have served Trump’s and CBS’s purposes to leave him on, saying “look, we tolerate Trump critics!” while Colbert continued having relatively little effect on either party. Canning him so transparently is much more publicly damning for Trump (as the fascist caudillo) and CBS (as his lapdog) than anything Colbert would have done in four more years of being on the air.
Colbert needs to do what Joy Reid and Don Lemon have done, go indie and become ungovernable. I bet he would do numbers.
Everyone sees what Paramount did; they want their corporate mergers and Republican tax cuts. So they are getting rid of the top-rated late night host.
Think any one of these networks would cancel a successful show because they talked shit about Joe Biden or Kamala Harris? Absolutely not. And this should tell you a lot.
All eyes are on Jimmy Kimmel next I bet. Let's see what Disney does.
“mainstream Democrats today would likely blame the comedians for helping force out Johnson in 1968 and thus electing Richard Nixon.”
This is the argument I’ve seen a couple of times lately, from Dems/liberals — that because he mercilessly roasted Trump in 2011 at the WHC dinner, Obama is to blame for Trump’s deciding to run for president in 2016. So I guess everything IS Obama’s fault after all. 🙄
Yeah, I've read that too, but it begs the question: why didn't TACO run against Obama in 2012? It it was Obama's roasting TACO in 2011 that got him to run, shouldn't he had run against the guy who roasted him?
Even before Colbert was back at work, there were rumors that he and Stewart would be let go. I think that was part of the deal, regardless of any Colbert monologues when he returned.
And what are they going to DO with that slot? The problem is that it is a late night slot on NETWORK TV which is like...how is that still even a THING. Like a wax cylinder in the age of streaming...NOTHING in that slot is going to do well. Streaming is the gamechanger. When I can watch what I want WHEN (that's the biggie) I want, WTF does network and cable TV have to offer. Hell, I'm 61 and TV and cable already feel 'old fashion' and 'out of style' to ME who grew up on the stuff.
The problem isn't who's in the slot...Its the slot itself. people who still watch 'TV' aren't AWAKE at that time in ANY case
Right!!?? God I have almost completely forgotten the days when TV just simply was off. Utterly inconceivable now. They should do the same thing with the Internet.
Daddy didn't want to give up his cable TV because he was used to it, and had a handful of shows that he liked to watch on a few channels, plus, sports - specifically college football and basketball, and soccer. But when he came home in April from the hospital, and into hospice care, we finally got him to cut the cable. He was pleased and surprised that he could watch his favorite shows when he was awake, the hours of which varied by day. And it was cheaper than cable. He was 89, and had had cable for 45 years, so understandable that he didn't want to learn something new. Maybe facing his mortality made it easier, plus, I was home most of the time to help him with getting the show he wanted to watch.
Good point - what will they do with that slot? They probably don't know and don't care.
I vaguely remember hearing about the Smothers Brothers show being canceled due to political pressure - my parents talking about how wrong it was, and they didn't even watch the show! But by 1968, like most Americans, they knew that we had been lied into war in Vietnam, and wanted us out and the POWs returned home.
It's one thing to cave to pressure from advertisers, as CBS did in 1970-1972, to cater to the 18-49 demo, especially the urban and suburban 18-49 demo, by canceling any "show with a tree in it," as Pat Buttram ("Green Acres" Mr. Haney) reportedly said, and replacing with shows like "All in the Family" and "The Mary Tyler Moore Show." But caving to political pressure is never right. CBS got away with it in 1969, but I hope this kills the network. Things are different now - back then, there were just 3 national networks, some independent local channels, and PBS just starting. No internet, so no streaming, no YouTube, and home video was only for the wealthy. There are far more choices now.
Interestingly, my parents were in the demo group that CBS catered to 55 years ago, and approved of the changes, especially Daddy, He detested the rural comedies, and only liked "The Addams Family" and "Get Smart" out of all of the 1960s comedies. Mama didn't dislike the rural comedies, but preferred the more urban, relevant comedies of the 1970s. Me? I like both, maybe because of nostalgia - shows of my childhood and adolescence.
I’m curious just how damaging the Smothers Brothers were to Johnson—I’d figure their viewership was already pretty antiwar when they started ripping on Vietnam. And once they’re canceled at LBJ’s behest, that’s worse press than just leaving them on.
As an old, I'm probably not part of a representative group, but I never watch network TV, and don't subscribe to cable TV. I have a high-speed internet subscription, and can stream whatever I want, or watch stuff on YouTube. President Pedochet may want to censor and control what people watch, but does he really think everyone is just watching network shows on cable TV? Is that still a thing?

As always, the cruelty is the point...ad infinitum!

End broadcasting and just play the anthem before signing off for the night like they used to.
Man, that freaked me out when I was a little kid! Like the world was ending every night
Right!!?? God I have almost completely forgotten the days when TV just simply was off. Utterly inconceivable now. They should do the same thing with the Internet.
I remember those when I was a kid! And in my area we had both the American and Canadian anthems!
Reruns of CSI/NCIS/FBI and whatever other alphabet soup they have.
Or maybe they’ll just have a blank screen
To the extent that I watch CBS it’s through Paramount+ for Colbert, Matlock, Daily Show, and Ghosts
Ah, THAT makes sense...So Paramount is essentially subsuming CBS's CONTENT...Not its 'format'
OK, that scans

I'd never thought of it this way, but I suppose Gilligan's Island would fall under the 'rural' comedy category...LOL!

It's especially ironic that CBS owns "The Twilight Zone" and has the episode right there for streaming any time it wants.
good catch!
