Funny, because Republicans seem to perfectly understand the power of the message. If the shoe was on the other foot, not only would Republicans hold month-long hearings on this, the GOP-appointed SCOTUS justices would be volunteering to testify at them to lend the hearings gravitas and send the message that THIS IS NOT OKAY. This would be blasted through the media, even the liberal outlets, and the median voter would be hearing "whoa, this is a big deal, actually". While it wouldn't mean removal of a justice, it would be such a threat to the appearance of legitimacy that SCOTUS relies on (remember, the only reason "judicial review" is a thing is because SCOTUS said it was, and the other branches agreed to give it the legitimacy as a norm) that you could either see justices agree to an ethics standard and recuse from these cases, or better, the ground would be laid for adding seats to the Court if these hacks don't resign.

Meanwhile, Durbin decides not to bother (I mean, why send the message that this is any big thing?) and the liberals on SCOTUS haven't said much, if anything, about this at all. So of course the median voter just hears "Alito puts up flag, liberals go hysterical, hey what's for dessert?"

Thanks for this - my letters to Dick Durbin and my own Senators urging hearings are sent.

I urge everyone reading this to do the same- their offices count all contacts by subject - make sure your subject line clearly mentions Alito Hearings and call for immediate action.
