That combination of “I’m an evil piece of shit and this is mu chance to unleash my demons” with”I’m corrupt and happy to play along and enable it” and “I’m such weak trash all I can do is tut tut and just forgive everyone when I take power eventually” all ensures we are going down the drain, courtesy of those in power and influence and the fact that the rest of us just haven’t the gumption to overthrow the whole bunch.
Very few people have the stomach to see what happens at the end of a revolution. It's usually not pretty nor peaceful. Reminded of Ghaddafi.
Kind of ruins the fantasy to see heroes get blood on their hands.
The fantasy version is far nicer.
I'm honestly not sure what the future course for Democrats should be. Because a part of me thinks they will have to do some very not-nice things to put things right for a generation.
The moral rot has never more evident that in this entire administration and the SCOTUS who keep enforcing it. I didn’t think that I could reach a higher level of disgust but every damn day it’s more disturbing to see the loss of civility and respect.
It is indeed shocking how many people, when given the choice to be their worst selves, take it. This has been the hardest, worst lesson of the Trump reign of error.
Precisely...he won, not because he somehow lured them into being Nazis...all he did was give them permission to be out and loud about their Nazi desires.
Americans have always been a seething mass of oppressor and oppressed, usually quite openly. Freedom has always been a hard, sometimes bloody grind two steps forward, 1 ½ step backwards, one step forward, three back.
We're better than we used to be, but as the current climate shows it's a hard-won and often fragile "better".
As always, a fascinating article! You're the new Roger Ebert!
Thanks!

Yes in the real world, people go for top-down evil if it aligns with their prejudices (Usually conservative-coded.)
