10/10 Stephen! I'm so sick of this situation. After seeing photos of the East Wing of the White House being DEMOLISHED from this morning, much like the Felon of the United States once did to another landmark, the Bonwit Teller building in NYC, ignoring all requirements and laws and Congressional oversight, I don't have a problem getting my rage on. I only have difficulty cooling it down. He is going to burn it all down as King Diarrhea hurtles toward his death, isn't he?

The ones to keep watch upon are Voight, Miller, Vance, Rubio, Bondi, the Traitor John Roberts, Alito, Thomas, and the craven Trio, and all the rest of the villains infesting our government, abusing our tax dollars, hurting the people, and forcing a coup on democracy.

I think Newsome would make a good president in normal times. He's been a good governor overall. Not great, but good.

But the country really has been indoctrinated to hate California and Californians and see us as Other.

And I'm sure not Newsome is ruthless and vicious enough to do what needs to be done to secure democracy from falling the next time voters decide to empower the GOP.

I'm not sure any Democrat does, really.

You'd need a Democrat willing to play Trump's game, willing to stack the Court to let them do so, and a Democratic Congress willing to go along with it and then pass laws patching up the law to prevent future presidents from doing it again and a Democratic president willing to relinquish those powers and sign those bills into law. And you'd need to be ruthless enough to put Republicans in jail within a four year term.

I've compared the current political landscape to a football game where one team plays normally whenever they have the ball but the other one outright cheats and shoots at the other players. No matter how well you play when you have the ball, you are not going to win. And "just never let them get the ball" isn't a viable strategy.

To Dem leaders in Congress: stop being afraid of calling out evil - and it's not just trump, but the magas that control Congress and the magas that hold a 6-3 majority in the Supreme Court. You can do it without calling trump voters evil, because most are not. Misguided and mistaken? Sure, and messages can be framed for them to join the majority of Americans who want a functioning government for ALL of us, We the People.

Well, the electorate has to upgrade too.

I'm resigned to Newsom winning due to the Democratic desire for "sick dunks" and then we'll get plied with FUD about him. That said, at least Newsom has a wiener and he's not of a minority so maybe more people will vote for him.

Democrats need to flip more than a few Trump 2024 voters if they hope to win back the House

I disagree with this premise. He only won the popular vote by 2 million, meanwhile 20 million registered voters stayed home. Not eligible voters, of which there are many more, but people who bothered to register didn't show up. Those are the people we need to court, not fucking brainwashed maga. Those people are gone.

So called sane republicans are already starting to see how off the rails this has all gotten. The person who stands up and says "we are undoing everything and vigorously pursuing charges for all involved" gets my vote. I don't think that's Newsom, but someone needs to start saying it soon.

Dems lost ground with working class POC, who aren’t MAGA. They just voted based on their pocket books.

Exactly. They are likely to vote against the GOP, as they aren't cultists. They vote according to their material interests.

My thoughts, precisely put.

Thanks for clarifying the numbers. I thought that the eighty-ish million fucking idiots that refused to vote were actually registered voters.

We laugh at how stupid and ignorant the average MAGA is, and that is undeniable, but they outsmarted us, didn’t they? They showed up.

Who’s laughing now? (They won’t be for long though, Trump fucks over e’erybody!)

My problem with saying "vigorously pursuing charges" is that they get an out to dismiss the cases or carve out special exceptions. We see that the pricktator has wide deference in the legal system (including unlimited appeals like they're breadsticks) because of his position as representative of the unreconstructed. I can see such plans not only being dashed but then the voters punishing Dems who make such promises.

For example, look at what's happening to Letitia James (who has actual Ws against the pricktator). His consequences are absent.

This is where I think Democrats are going through their 2016 moment. In 2016, Republican voters worked themselves into a lather over Obama, who they thought sneered at them and ran roughshod over their GOP reps—whether this is accurate ant the point, they believed it. So when their candidates for 2016 were pushing themselves as “super conservative” on various issues, or very experienced at governing or legislating, the voters rejected them in favor of the guy who bluntly told them their enemies were scum and he’d fuck them up. Complaints from his opponents that Trump wasn’t conservative on key issues or even fit to govern fell on deaf ears—here was a guy who was pure id impulse and spoke to their rage. No one else seemed to capture that, certainly not as well.

Democrats I think are ready for someone who recognizes that Republicans are scum, and hits them above, below and through the belt. They won’t care even if the person isn’t that liberal (“oh but it matters to me if they favor single payer healthcare”, you say—but a growing plurality of Dem voters figure policy positions won’t matter if our side doesn’t win, and any Dem in office will at least be game for negotiation on liberal policies), or particularly experienced (Obama had barely any experience in 2008). A smart candidate will follow Newsom’s lead here, and push rage, humor and fight in social media, public appearances, and interviews. Everyone else would come across as Jeb Bush.

You state Newsome’s position on Trans is horrific. How so? Because he questions Trans in women sports?

A quick internet search shows Newsom just vetoed a healthcare bill that supported trans health care four days ago, it that enough information or do you want me to google that for you some more?

Which is where the large majority of voters are. They generally agree that trans people should be allowed to live and work as they are without fear, but draw the line at using a male's biological body to compete against biological females. That does not seem bigoted or horrific to me, so unless Stephen can give me another reason to think so, I'll disagree with him here.

Stranger Than Friction's avatar

Ya know, if the trans athletes were winning against the other female athletes, actually WINNING the contests SO OFTEN that females could not compete against them, then the folks who don't support the science and reality of trans people, but instead argue from their vibes and feelings, well they might have a legitimate question to put to those scientists, researchers, doctors, and supporters of trans people. I don't think there is truly a pattern there supporting the idea that trans athletes will compete unfairly against females. I DO notice assholes like Joanna K. Rowling calling out female athletes for being too butch looking or competing at their best against other female athletes, though. I hope that Olympic female boxer hasn't been forced to drop her suit against Rowling in French courts for accusing her of being a male cheating at boxing on the international stage, the one who received death threats as a result.

I will say this, at one point the large majority of voters were okay with racial segregation ("separate but equal"). The electorate had to upgrade then as it has to now. Especially as a lot of people are, well, *ignorant* about trans people and how they come to be.

Because that kind of position isn't compatible with "trans people should be allowed to live and work as they are without fear," especially when a very common element used in successful MAGA sadopopulism is a slur of "dudes in dresses."

In addition to him voting against trans healthcare, what other things would you like him to do to show he is no ally?

Please take some time and think about the fact that the governor of a state has almost nothing to do with who plays sports as adults, the sporting orgs have their own regulation. This is not about men playing in women's sports, this is really about school aged children, what's in their pants and how girls are "supposed to" look and behave. And there is very little (none?) reason do divide athletes by sex as children. Once you do, how do you do it? The way that adult, professional sports do which is measuring hormones? Or do you start to question children about what's in their pants?

Turn the fucking question back on these assholes, why are they spending so much time thinking about what's in children's pants? Biological sex is not binary and this conversation needs to be flipped, not capitulated to. IDGAF about who plays what sports. I give a shit about our basic rights being violated. We have to stop playing on their terms. Homelssness, income disparity, healthcare, education, the environment, take your pick and stop getting stuck in the mud with these pedophile protectors, argue the points that are important to you. I doubt it's this.

I’ve written about this before but the “trans sports” issue is not really an area for reasonable “concession” because Republicans are openly pushing to eradicate trans people from public life. It’s like saying allies need to moderate about Jews when contending with straight up Nazis.

I don’t get why we’re having the debate about sports when Republicans are openly hostile to a trans legislator — misgendering her and using slurs when referring to her. It’s clear what their deal is.

A big problem for Dems is that they moderate with themselves. It’s like proactively telling the home invader they can have your TV and stereo system when it’s clear they plan to kill you.

I agree, full stop. I hope I was able to shed some light on tgeir bad-faith arguements, the proof that Newsom is anti trans is just an internets search away.

Once we give away one right, they’ll just come for the next one. It starts with screwing over trans people and ends with us all in penal colonies picking the crops for $1/ day prison wages.
