I put a link to this column for “foosball” which appears to be Jeff Bezos’ account. It had his statement about all the wonderful journalism they would be (not) doing. giantwankingmotion.gif. (You did an admirable roast of his self-serving bullshit.)
I was promptly blocked from further discussion. You may be too, now. Anyway, fuck that shithead.
Saw a meme about this the other day. Goose chasing Bezos yelling, "Whose liberties, Jeff?"
Not great art, but directly on point. As you say, he has nothing to say when actual liberties are attacked, nor when the free market is battered. It's hard to imagine this new Op/Ed page as anything but tragic farce.
I have to give Bezos credit for saving "The Expanse" long enough to wrap up the first half of the story arc.
Still, while Bezos' kindred spirit Jules-Pierre Mao was sympathetically portrayed, he explicitly wasn't a hero. Good thing for the fans that Jeff missed that bit.
No discussion of the decline and fall of WaPo is complete without examining their succession of management under Bezos. When I picked up a digital subscription in 2017, Marty Baron was the Executive Editor and Fred Hiatt was Editorial Editor and the editorials were mostly anti-Trump at the time with a couple of far right exceptions (Theissen, Will). Jennifer Rubin was just starting recovery from her rabid anti-Hillary op-eds (she was called Jen-ghazi in the comments) but still very much Republican.
I enjoyed the writing, opinions and news, and the overall slant of the paper, as myopically Beltway-oriented as it was. The opinion section started giving more and more to the RW, regularly running an increasing cabal of former and current National Review and American Enterprise Institute shills like Hewitt, Ponnuru, Geraghty. The 'Fact Checker' Kessler basically gave up on Trump and started going after Biden and later Harris over tiny details that he would blow up into a 4 Pinocchio screed that minimized Trump and elevated the 'both sides' bullshit.
Hiatt died in 2021, Marty Baron retired and Sally Buzbee was brought in as Executive Editor with a avowed mission to cater to the right and try to build up flagging subscriptions. This is when I noticed the news pieces were definitely slanting to Trump and 'both sides', mostly through misleading headlines and giving most of the column to one viewpoint with a one sentence acknowledgement at the end of a piece of information that undermined the headline premise. I started hate-reading the paper about then. The opinion section was (almost) completely anti-Biden by this point. (tip of the hat to Milbank) Every economic piece was '<insert good economic news> ... BUT RECESSION IS COMING!'
Bezos started pushing a couple of his editorials in 2024 and finally brought in William Lewis as WaPo CEO with full editorial control and in the process dry-gulched Buzbee. Lewis is a veteran Rupert Murdoch crony, heavily involved in the phone hacking scandal in Britain and general all round RW shit. I had cancelled my sub in Feb 2024 but still had access until October where I went full bomb-thrower in the comments section. I was not alone, hundreds of us filled the comments of some unabashedly fawning Trump puff pieces and Biden/Harris hate. When my sub ran out finally in October, lady Vorpal re-upped because 'I like the recipes and Carolyn Hax column' but by November, she had also cancelled as the paper became a full on sanewashing organ for Trump.
My final comment in Oct 2024: 'Democracy Dies in the Bathtub with WaPo Holding it Under'
“In 2023, Jeff Bezos made over $7.9 million per hour.” (Source Google)
“The average hourly wage for Amazon warehouse workers in North Carolina is around $17.18.” (Source Google)
Jeff Bezos does not work $7.9 million times harder than the average Amazon worker does. In fact, not one single product that is ordered from the Amazon website passes through Jeff Bezos’s hands.
Jeff Bezos is not “…of America and for America.” He is of himself and for himself. He likes the status quo of inequality and wants to keep it that way.
We can slage Carnigie and Sinclair all we want but at least we got museums and libraries out of it. I don't see any of that from this class of robber Barron's.
Carnegie did all that because he was a 'devout' Christian and feared going to hell for all the manifold sins he'd committed getting his wealth.
Notice his devotion dodn't extend to NOT COMMITTING those sins in the first place, oh no...he left a long trail of ruin and death in his wake.
All those libraries (and there is a gorgeous one in my MIL's home town that her brother helped to restore) were nothing more than bribes to St. Peter...
Personal liberty? So that means he’s against the persecution of trans women? Notice it’s never about trans men. I think they’re afraid they’ll get into a “Lola” situation but not in a cool way like the song.
Trumpers. They do not care about you. Not one iota. You are an ant. They are grasshoppers. As soon as you figure that out, maybe you can join with the other ants and rid ourselves of these evil men.
Hell, Bezos has helped smother democracy with a plastic bag over the head.
Even if Amazon gets tanked, even if this dies, he's so wealthy he's insulated from consequences. Just like Apartheid Clyde. The massive bag fumble he had with Mackenzie Scott couldn't even humble him.
Gilded Age 2.0 is proving to be the hell Democrats warned it would be, but people wanted to put monsters in power for their own privilege and/or clout. And untouchable billionaires know where the money is, it's about fucking the rest of us.
When Bezos says "personal liberties," he means his own personal liberty and the hell with the rest of us. When he says "free markets," he means that he can do whatever he wants without consequences, no matter the damage to others.

Ended my sub to wapo as soon as bullethead killed the Vice Pres thumbs up
Battle Hymn of the Republic? More likely regime-approved Lee Greenwood's one recognizable song.
"Democracy Dies In Darkness When We Held A Pillow Over It's Face"
Democracy is dying while talking heads calmly discuss and outline it for us, with no apparent concern of doing anything about it.

I can't wait to permanently delete my Amazon account tomorrow!!!

Hey, at least it worked.
"Personal liberties" LOLOLOL.
Personal liberties = The Personal Liberty of Cis White Men. FFS.
Of a certain income tax bracket. But at least poor white trash can fill their stomachs with ate.
Hate*

That one came to mind!

Cancelling our Prime subscriptions will make a bigger impression

I wonder how Bezos feels about the personal liberty to tell our betters to "stuff it".
Not really. I know how he feels.
It's great to be the king!
It is, until they lead you to the guillotine.
speed the day.
