If your only weapon is head-assed sadopopulism, then everything has to be a culture war. Every last thing. Practicality, fun, all of it goes out of the window because the most important thing is that the Libs must be owned, the *others* must be isolated. So if any popular media even makes a *hint* of inclusivity, it must be destroyed.
That's the question in life, isn't it? If your loved one disappeared... if your wife or daughter died of sepsis because of the law... if the "proper authorities" bombed your house and stood by as violent militias terrorized you and burned your lands... If you were driven from your homes into the harsh elements and fled from place to place... if you were trapped in a refugee camp without a voice... if your children had their opportunities taken from them... if they were murdered by a stray bomb or bullet... If you and your loved ones were sent to an extermination camp.
"What would i do if this happened to me?"
The answer is that we don't really know.
It's easy to moralize and imagine ourselves as a heroic martyr and longsuffering like Job. It's also really easy to imagine that I could become a "monster" in return, that I could decide that I wanted my tormentors to feel the same pain, to feel the same helplessness as their cherished loved ones died, to want eye owed to me for the eye taken from me.
If someone isn't capable of asking that question, they should never be given power, especially power over life and death. That's one of the things that makes Spider-man and Superman great heroic characters. They ask that question of themselves constantly. Hell, even Batman asks that question... he'll punch the daylights out of a criminal and then put on his Bruce Wayne identity and give them a chance to work a job with a living wage.
That's a question too many people don't ask. And so we continue on the nation's violent path "thinking" that if we're just a bit more violent, commit a few more atrocities, then we'll "fix" the problem. But it never works.
So I really liked the movie but as soon as they said the name Jean Grey I said "oh no" to myself (I stayed spoiler free). The Uncanny X-Men were MY comic book. I still have boxes of them in a closet. I'm glad she wasn't the actual villain in the end but my heart sank. I'm still mad after what the MCU did to Wanda in that terrible Doctor Strange movie. They made a mother looking for her children into the villian on Mother's Day, WTF? And now Jean Grey. They made two strong female superheroes into villains, maybe there's a bit of misogyny there. And to nerd out a bit, are we just making things up out of whole cloth in the MCU now? Jean was a telepath who later developed telekinesis, later still became one with the Phoenix force and only then, maybe she could do all the body inhabiting stuff but not as a teenager. She needed Prof X to teach her how to quiet the voices. Probably an alternate earth thing.
Give 'em time, and maga will be whining about woke Spider Man, especially if the movie does well at the box office. From what I've read, it's doing very well indeed.
But is "Spiderman" a classic of the White European cultural canon Like The Illiad and The Odyssey and therefore "worthy" of MAGA protests of non-White casting decisions in a filmic rewriting of a fictional myth? (I am refundantly refundant for emphasis here.) Mostly these MAGA dipwads defend "lit-er-ah-toor" that none of them have read, but they are pretty sure "caucasians" wrote and are about "caucasians", you know, like White Jesus and White God making White Adam and Eve in His White image in The Bible.
