We’re in a dangerous test of free speech that IS NOT hateful, just not what the current Gestapo wants to hear. I feel that we are failing tragically.
Soon, absolutely any attempts to call out these people will result in a round up of people who want their voices heard because they’re counter to their path to authoritarianism.
If you can't even get off of XWITTER as an act of protest and resistance, how the FUCK can we count on you when MUCH MORE will be asked of you? Getting off Xitter and Amazon and FB is LITERALLY the LEAST you can do...And if you can't even do THAT????
She's an internet fave and she's not An Old. She'll be fine (at least until people need an ex post facto reason to not support her if she runs for higher office).
America is, first and foremost, a marketing operation—selling platitudes while resisting the reality of those ideals at every turn. The three-fifths compromise, the refusal to hold Confederate rebels accountable for a rebellion built on racial apartheid, and the enduring post-racial myth are all examples of how this country manufactures memory to avoid reckoning with its deepest contradictions. It’s a cruel joke for justice-oriented Americans and marginalized communities who experience this hypocrisy daily.
Draw the line here or not at all. This coupled with Congress voting away it's constitutional power to raise and abolish taxes. What's the point of pretending we are in a Republic anymore?
That's really frightening what Moskowitz said. Isn't he a lawyer? Look, I get that Khalil allegedly being supportive of Hamas' aims is distasteful. But the law is the law.
And again so many people are forgetting, if the law around citizenship and residency is this fungible, NOBODY is safe. Because as I was screaming about before when people wanted to vote for the ethnic cleansing ticket in the first place (to get rid of minorities they don't like in the USA) - to the minorities caping for this. Your "came here the right way" or "I'm legal" only depends on the local bigotry of whomever is interrogating you. Your green card is "just a piece of paper" with a sufficiently bigoted interrogator and we're seeing this right now.
But again, prejudice, privilege and clout were the priorities on November 5, 2024 and we're going to have to have the electorate upgrade as it needed to do post-Taney Court 1.0.
As my great-grandmother said, saftey is an illusion. Your odds change from place to place, time to time, but you're never really safe. Make today count.
Fortunately most Jews (with some gross exceptions like ADL) are smart enough to know that when a fascist says they’re acting to protect Jews, it’s time to look the fuck out. Long experience in being scapegoated and pogrommed leads one to instinctively look out for the little guy, and fight hard against fascism even when it’s purportedly aiming to “protect” Jews. That of course leads fascists to hate them more for being “ungrateful.”
Our country is being tested all at once, and there are some rather distressing signs of what is to come. We need total opposition and may want to consider next steps if the institutions fail.
I just hope everyone avoids violence because this regime is aching fir it’s Reichstag Fire.
"I just hope everyone avoids violence because this regime is aching fir it’s Reichstag Fire."
That's the whole sad trick of it. They are going to keep pushing us until violence becomes inevitable. there is no way to avoid responding to this with violence IF they keep pushing and they WILL keep pushing. You can't avoid a Reichstag fire because they are manufactured out of whole cloth...ANYTHING can be turned into a Reichstag fire.... If you don't respond with violence they will kill you, if you respond with violence they will probably kill you. One of them is guaranteed death, the other one provides a fighting chance. But whenever such time emerges, it will not emerge from a plan or a strategy. It will snap fire into place like a Romanian Christmas party. In other words it will not come from a controlled or controllable place . Revolutions only appear organized in the rearview mirror of history.
I’m curious why campuses are not flooded with protests now—or are they actually happening and they’re just under-reported? Because these clear violations of due process (and the administration’s strong-arming of colleges through funding threats) seems something protesters could more directly impact than the actions of a foreign country.
Did Americans just lose the will to fight after last year? If so this doesn’t bode well.
Two types of people by my estimation: some people didn't want to heed the warnings before November 5, then they realized that everything came true and they don't want to be the nail sticking out that gets hammered down...
And another type found there was no clout to be gained because Republicans are in office and can (and will) gain a lot of joy from brutalizing protestors. You get the most clout, pound for pound, by protesting Democrats because a modern Democrat won't advocate violence against the protestors. This is why you could, for example, heckle Kamala Harris' rallies and you wouldn't be leaving on a stretcher. Or you could throw cash in Hillary Clinton's face.
That may be the calculation but the public also picks up cues from protests. If they see FEWER protests now than last year, they’ll assume things must be better than they were then. It’s why antiwar protests had to continue after Nixon was in office.
I don't have a lot of faith in the American people honestly, because again they were warned over and over. So we'll see. If the consequences of this become "real" maybe they'll act but it'll be too late anyway.
I mean hell the normalization started with the MSM segments of the rightwing media human centipede, with all the sanewashing and essentially dowsing for coherence out of this pricktator. I think if they stick to terrorizing small minorities and ramping Americans up to accept more and more of that, perhaps large-scale protests might happen. MIGHT.
When everyone has equal access to ALL information (be it true or false), the 'information' you choose says EVERYTHING about 'you' and nothing about the 'information'
Like you and I have said before...The democratic message was out there LOUD and CLEAR...Its just that most Americans either ignored the message or went with the other one...
Well for one, it's winter. Any protests for me will need to include a heated place to sleep right now.
Also, the campuses are quiet for the same reason the parks and streets and coroprations / non profit orgs are- fear. Schools DEFINITELY tightened up their rules of conduct before this school year started, you can get kicked out with your $100,000 in student debt intact but no degree, and much quicker than in the past. All of these groups of people are afraid.
I know I am.
I just began volunteering at a community kitchen once a week. I want to feed people, and I want to learn how to feed people. I want my skill in the future to be feeding the people. Plan ahead, what will your skill be?
honestly? You make a good point...'weather' could make a difference. And whatever resistance is/was going to emerge wasn't going to be immediate...I know it feels like a year, but we're only 2 months into this nightmare...Grassroots rolls like this:
If it’s fear, that doesn’t bode well, because the regime will be more emboldened. I hope we see mass protests breaking out everywhere—at every government office and town square in the country. Without that Congress will settle into “sleep mode” which we’re already seeing signs of.
Democratic leaders will come to the 'rescue' once we've done all the hard and dangerous prep-work....They ALWAYS play it safe, and once it becomes 'safer' to defend democracy and act on the will of the people who elected you than to just wither under fascist threats they'll show up...I'll be glad when they do, but believe you me, I will NOT be impressed
If Niemöller gets royalties every time his poem is invoked by the actions of these fascists, his estate's gonna be rich.

Chris Murphy is really shapin' up to be one of the fighters...moar pleez
Agreed!
Sen. Murphy's staff, if you're reading this, why isn't this video posted on Bluesky?
(And why are *any* Democrats still on zombie twitter?)
Exactly!
both very good and valid questions...
If you can't even get off of XWITTER as an act of protest and resistance, how the FUCK can we count on you when MUCH MORE will be asked of you? Getting off Xitter and Amazon and FB is LITERALLY the LEAST you can do...And if you can't even do THAT????
it bodes ill people, it bodes ill
(rhetorical you, not 'you' you)
(:
"Jared Moskowitz isn’t safe, either. His own nationalism won’t protect him once his dissent is deemed “anti-American” or “pro-terrorist.”
Are you saying that he won't even get points from Trump for throwing Al Green under the bus last week?
Also I didn't see AOC's name on the list of people demanding Khalil's release. That must've been an oversight or she was absent
EDIT: OK, this was a LETTER signed by 14 members...Not a vote....(my misunderstanding)...
She's an internet fave and she's not An Old. She'll be fine (at least until people need an ex post facto reason to not support her if she runs for higher office).
indeed!

"manufactures memory to avoid reckoning with its deepest contradictions"
Bingo

Boy if they hate antisemitism, wait till they find out who is President (both of them!)!

If we normalize this regime, look out.
I've been looking out since 2012.
I don't have a lot of faith in the American people honestly, because again they were warned over and over. So we'll see. If the consequences of this become "real" maybe they'll act but it'll be too late anyway.

The terrorists are the ones in charge of the federal government.
