It's surreal working in the Canadian tourism sector at the moment. I've a side gig driving a water taxi in Vancouver, and American cruise ship passengers make for a lot of our base in summer. Being friendly and helpful is an inherent part of the job but I don't WANT to be friendly or helpful to anyone who voted for this evil bullshit. My view is they've chosen to abandon polite society and are no longer entitled to its benefits. But of course there's no way of knowing unless they're wearing one of those stupid red hats -- which I've yet to see in the wild in Canada -- and so I find myself simply not engaging with tourists nearly as much unless they're obviously from overseas, Black or fellow Canadians. I explained my new dilemma in French to a bunch of sympathetic Parisians yesterday and, after they disembarked, another passenger who I hadn't realized was bilingual and works in hospitality as well, told me how much she felt the same way. Working a job that is reliant on tips from Americans now feels a bit like signing up for Stockholm syndrome.
I recently returned from a fantastic 16-day trip to Australia. Everyone was friendly and welcoming. I was asked a lot of questions, and once I made my dislike of the Oompa Loompa clear and expressed my horror at his actions, they became even friendlier and more welcoming.
Most foreigners are smart enough to realize that the Americans most likely to visit them are not the sort of dipshits who hate them—otherwise they wouldn’t be visiting. Sort of like how most Iranians you’ll meet in the U.S. are people who despise Iran’s current regime.
I don’t blame anyone for not wanting to visit us, though. A country electing a monster who wants to poison relations with our foreign friends—and refusing to remove him, despite his obvious mental danger—is not a country any sane person should feel comfortable in.
I live in a small town on the north Florida gulf coast, which for years has had a significant influx of Canadian snowbirds during the year. Our merchants are currently seeing a 25% drop in revenue from the drop in Canadian travelers. Oh, and did I mention that our county votes solidly Republican? Does anyone believe that they will change their behavior or make the connection?
Yikes about the phone. I am a walking advertisement for IHATETHEDONALD.com (just made that up). We’re going to Canada to visit our son who is staying there with his girlfriend who is a REAL Canadian girlfriend. Perhaps I’ll need to reset to factory settings and leave my iPad at home.
Lol, points for Kaiju Trump image... I see a badly fitting blond comb-over on a scaly monster with tiny hands stomping through an urban landscape whining 'No kaiju has EVER been treated this badly!!!'
Also: 'Dan Davis of Cleveland, Ohio, had planned a motorcycle trip this summer that included a few days in Ontario, but he changed his plans out of concerns that Canadians might have like ugly Americans. “On a motorcycle, you’re a little more vulnerable,” Davis said. “All it takes is one person to say, ‘You know what, I’m going to show these guys a lesson,’ whether it’s vandalizing a bike or … throwing a beer can at you.”'
Bullshit. I host my American friends up here in Canuckistan all the time and they remark on how polite and friendly Canadian are to Americans, even in current times. I suspect Dan would pull that shit on someone he didn't like.
It’s a very sad statement that even Americans are afraid to come BACK to their own country. This maladministration (thank you Seth) has made it an embarrassment to visit our closest allies and give them OUR support. I honestly don’t blame them for not wanting to take a chance to visit us. It’s simply not safe. Reap what you sow Rump.
Oh yeah my local economy also relies on Canadian tourism. Seeing relatively few Canadian license plates here.
But these are some of the wages of sadopopulism, which is very stupid and expensive...but easy to do. And it is in the service of the unreconstructed, who do not require that their godking knows even a single damned thing.
Though a serendipitous side effect for the maladministration is that it can hurt the economies of nominally "blue" border cities. And most major tourist cities (for good reason) have a lot of the minorities that the unreconstructed people hate.
I have great respect and sympathy for those opposed to the MAGAts’ criminal regime.
But it simply isn’t safe to travel to the US for now. Any more than it would be to go to North Korea. With even the apolitical being indefinitely detained, anyone would simply be foolish to go.
An overreaction?
TFG didn’t talk about making Canada a 51st state nor did he slap 35% tariffs on our major trading partner.
Nor were they throwing Canadians in ICE detention.
They have plenty of reason to be furious. They’ve done nothing but support us.
Further, a friend was up at Niagara Falls for a bachelorette party. The Canadians were not very nice to them.
Gee I wonder why?
I guess I've been camping out my whole life, then. I'd love a 2nd bathroom, though!

Fair point. Also they own passports, which I'm guessing isn't largely the case in the MAGAverse.

Doubt it...

The Kaiju comment definitely leaves a mental image.

Unintended consequences, what are those?

It isn't even safe for American CITIZENS to travel in and out of the US
