Democrats need their own Tea Party movement—their establishment is just too rotted out to handle the new politics. They still have no idea why Trump appeals to so many—they assume it’s his political stances, yet can’t explain why those stances are so unpopular and don’t help Democrats when they move toward those positions.
Trump succeeded because to many people he represented a break from the party establishments, an unfiltered id that seemed more real than the focus grouped personas of the typical pol. Jeffries’ buzzwords sounded like they came from a committee rather than his own off the cuff thoughts, and if they DID come from his off the cuff thoughts, that’s even worse (who thinks the phrase “truth to power” except a broken drone?). And as we speak this gang hopes to regain power by playing the same plays as before, just harder.
I’ve never had less confidence in this party. Without a major overhaul—replacing its pols and functionaries up and down the line—this is just going to stay the same, until it becomes moot when free elections are no longer a thing.
"What is truth?" Pontius Pilate, just before he condemned an innocent man to death. What this has to do with the post, I don't know, but it's what I thought of. As for Biden being pushed out of the race last year, I was against it until he actually did it. I was wrong, it was the right thing for him to do, and while Harris fell short, her campaign helped down ballot Dems. And when you think of how close she came, in such a short time, when TACO had been running since he lost in 2020, it was a remarkable feat. Yeah, close doesn't count in elections, but it means that TACO does NOT have a mandate, and wasn't even close to winning in a landslide, as some have claimed.
Biden would have lost SO MUCH harder than Harris did. Because of the lateness that Biden dropped out, tapping Harris was the best choice we had...Its not HER fault that there wasn't enough time to have a primary
Anyone who thinks Colbert has only made fun of Republicans is someone who's never actually watched him. (been Must See TeeVee in our household since the Colbert Report days...the very beginning of them because I remember watching the bit about 'Truthiness')
That said, Biden's fate is part of why I don't think anyone is actually going to listen to the Internet faves—many of them were begging Dems to not abandon him. Maybe that's why they've not pushed Hakeem Jeffries off the glass cliff yet?
The Democratic Party routinely shits on its base, then wonders why they fucking lose elections until things are so fucking dire people vote for them anyway...
Why do you use past tense? He’s alive * cookin’!
"...spells his first name correctly..." 👍🏻

I'm sure Colbert will be fine.

The 'extreme left' is entirely an invention by the right...SHAME on Jeffries for pushing RW talking points and memes.
Is he just a quieter Kirsten Sinema
Excellent commentary, Stephen. Thank you.
Thank you for this, Stephen. You deserve to be much more widely read and appreciated.
“The extreme left protest me more than they protest Donald Trump"
There is no "extreme left," Jeffries. Why would you insult the only people in this country who want to go forward?
And Donald Trump may have called his MAGA death cult "stupid" countless times, but never "extreme."
