I once saw JFK Jr at the Manhattan court house. He was using one of the pay phones, as one did back then, even lawyers and judges. They lined up to use them! I am rarely starstruck, but that dude's charisma had a planet-sized gravitational pull. I witnessed the phenomenon described in this interview: Every single person, with varying degrees of subtlety, was awestruck, like we were seeing the Virgin Mary in the clouds. I was (and remain) an infidel and opponent of political dynasties, but I damned if I wasn't overwhelmed by numinous awe that is embarrassing in retrospect.

Thank you for this, Stephen. As a child of the 60s, I’ll never forget where I was/what I was doing when both JFK and JFKJr. died. Maybe the most heartbreaking image of 1963 was of three-year-old John-John, prompted by his grieving mother, saluting as his father’s funeral procession passed by. America’s “royal family” endured so much tragedy over the years, but Camelot was a bright spot while it lasted.
