First, I will never refer to the ballroom as anything other than "the Epstein Ballroom".

And, why should Trump stop with the East Wing of the White House? What's next? Will he decide to add Home Depot gilded ornaments to the Washington Monument?

He will place himself in Lincoln's seat at the memorial with Lincoln and Robert E. Lee kneeling to the left and right

He could demolish all the rest of the WH, and the MSM and the repubs will just shrug.

Huh.

I know tragedy is a device used to communicate warning to the community, but I have only read or saw "historical" works.

It hits different when it's tragedy in the moment.

Great piece.

The fact this is happening without one single GOP hoping to stop it is terrifying and sad. Luke all their execution it’ll be sloppy and made with tons of building flaws. It could possibly even cave in on them or start burning because they failed to install the electrical properly. It’s bad optics when people are being asked to work for free or go without supplemental avenues to even eat. A vainglorious monument to a fragile man’s ego. Who builds this when they only have 3 years left of their term. Certainly someone who thinks that they are never going to leave. Maybe they can bury him in the floor. A girl can dream.

Bad optics, or an intentional provocation?

It is absolutely terrifying.

When Michael Anton wrote his 2016 Conservative masturpeice “the flight 93 election” people assumed it was a metaphor.

But it’s always literal with these folks. Always.

The fact that Trump achieved what those poor brave people on flight 93 gave their lives to prevent sickens me to my stomach, but I guess that is the point. Trump is a terrorist, it’s time he was acknowledged as such.

Stephen, thanks for the Money Pit clip. The late spouse and I bought a fairly grand fixer-upper back around the time this movie came out, and several scenes from Money Pit mirrored what we were dealing with — kitchen nearly lighting on fire, plaster falling off the walls, etc. The “two weeks” response was one we heard many times. Thanks for the memories … I think 😊

“At this moment in time, of course, the ballroom is really the president’s main priority.”

This is why I harp on about, not only Murc's Law, but also the worthless access-based glorified gossip columnists that make up the so-called MSM. They are, of course, a vital segment in the rightwing media human centipede. And they are part of the reason we can't have nice things.

Can you imagine what would've happened to Joe Biden or Kamala Harris if—say—Karine Jean-Pierre or Jen Psaki had said something like that? And your reminder of the *scandal* it became with Kamala Harris buying cookware with HER OWN GODDAMN MONEY, makes me stabbity.

If Dems don't use the destruction of OUR White House as the perfect metaphor in their ads ongoing, we'll know they've been bought.

Suzie Greenburg's avatar

I'm sure most of them are 'boiling frogs,' and that the creep of temperature plus desensitization via fire-hose-of-shit every day has neutralized most of them. It's easy to do when you're paid to sit in the pot.

Frank Talk, Action Pundit!'s avatar

I.e., "bought"

I guess it’s me constantly playing it over in my head, wondering how many of them, in their own heads, believe the lies they tell themselves that they aren’t owned.

I just remembered his “wandering around on top of the roof” episode from a little while ago.

I’m sure somebody clocked that he was planning a reno at that time, but I’m embarrassed to say I didn’t.

trump could never have done this, or even been president, if it hadn't been for his enablers - the Republican Party, most of the MSM, and voters too lazy and/or stupid to pay attention to the candidates (not just what they say, but what they have done with their lives up to running for office). Sometimes I hate them more than I hate trump.

Had he done this legally (with Congressional approval and funding) I wouldn’t have a problem with taking down the East Wing and putting up something more functional. The WH went through a lot of changes over the years. But being a demented criminal he’s of course doing this illegally, during a shutdown with private money, and his plan for what goes up in its place is a monstrosity that dwarfs the main building and is obviously just so he can throw fundraisers for more bribes.

Any Democrat running for president (assuming we have any free elections after this) must run on tearing that shit down on day one, legally or otherwise. Tolerating this bastard just makes us complicit in becoming a shit hole country.

Linda1961 is woke and proud's avatar

Is it really with private money? trump's a liar, so without proof, we don't know that it's private money. And if it is private money, is it legal?

BrandoG's avatar

Illegal if done with private money, and illegal if done with public money without a congressional appropriation. We are in Louis XIV but demented territory now.

SethTriggs's avatar

If it comes from the pricktator or any of his underlings, it's a lie. This is a conduit for bribes and graft. (Also this kind of donation is certainly illegal for a government-owned building) But he's not elected to be a legal, upstanding person. He's elected to smash the minorities that many Americans hate.

Out of all the dumb, illegal, immoral shit going on constantly, this one hits different. He talked about building a ballroom and just a few months later, the entire east wing is gone? I couldn't add a room to my house in that time! What happened to permits and reviews of plans? All that history gone because of one man. I don't give a shit about sunk costs, I will vote for whoever says they are tearing it down on day one. I will however accept renaming it the Obama Ballroom. And hey next president: if we are allowing bold shit like this, how about we get that fucking bullet train from LA to SF?

SethTriggs's avatar

Permits are for Democrats. The pricktator knows he is shielded by Taney Court 2.0 as well as the safety he has from Krazy Eyes and Frau Pam. Those two toadstools are where they are solely to shield the pricktator from legal exposure as he and his pals indulge in their crimes.

Cateck's avatar

In other words, permits are for suckers.

One day, every judge on the Supreme Court who voted for the unconstitutional idea that one man is above the law should be impeached. I would support any Dem who proposed this.

So is paying contractors.

Sherry's avatar

No one probably. They’ll most likely have to use undocumented workers and then have ICE round them up for deportation. I would not put it past them.

SethTriggs's avatar

Every deal a person foolishly makes with the pricktator is always intended to end with "heads I win, tails you lose."
