After election night 2004, a friend of mine who was an expert in statistics at the Wharton School looked st the results in Ohio and concluded (don’t ask me how) that there had been voting irregularities involving the voting machines. Had John Kerry not conceded so quickly (has anyone ever asked him why he did that?), the results could have been challenged.

In a nutshell, Bush got a second term because of 9/11. Yes, of course he bungled it. Doesn't matter - it only matters when Democrats bungle. It was his chance to strut around and look presidential without having to do anything but look solemn and nod occasionally. And President C-student milked it for all it was worth. Rode that puppy all the way to re-election, particularly after Republicans decided military heroism in a candidate only mattered when they did it, and that the lack of such heroism in their candidates mattered not at all.

By comparison, I will never forget Karl Rove's meltdown when Ohio went the OTHER way in 2008. There was skullduggery afoot, I'm still convinced of it.

I was coming here to say the same thing. Didn’t he literally run off camera when Ohio was called for Obama?

Them comparing standing in line to vote to standing in line for a roller coaster is such bullshit. Anyone in line for a roller coaster isn’t generally doing so on a work day. They’re on vacation.

Thank you, Stephen, for this blast from the past.

The day after election day 2004, when we were waiting for the final decision after a night of Ohio fuckery and then heard Kerry had lost, is one of those moments in time in which I’ll never forget where I was and what I was doing when I got the news. I recall being in tears in the voting booth because of outrage over the Swiftboating ratfuckery, and the bullshit over G-Dubya’s “military record” that led to Dan Rather’s ultimate ouster from 60 Minutes. In 2004, after SCOTUS installed Bush the Lesser as POTUS in 2000, we were somewhat stunned when Kerry lost. Little did we know then how much worse it was all going to get.
