Senator Fettermanchin has become the living, breathing incarnation of Murc's Law: "Only Democrats have any agency or accountability. Every Republican is a sui generis curiosity, to be talked about, discussed, but never held accountable no matter what they say or do."
So this kind of thing is the SAME as how, you know, Republicans don't receive any political/media downside or penalty for hurting Democratic states when they're hit by disasters. Violent attitudes and eliminationist rhetoric against Democrats is actually fine, especially in the larger media ecosystem. In fact it is so much so that inverting the perpetrators of political violence in this country and just blaming people on the left is such a reflex that many media agencies and figures just play along.
Paradoxically this is despite the embracement of "Second Amendment Solutions" among prominent rightwing figures, and how "guns=freedom." It's despite the usage of particularly obnoxious and intimidating uses of vehicles and flags.
Why? Because Democratic politicians enfranchise the minorities that the unreconstructed hate. It's really not easy to see this. You only need to push aside the paper-thin excuses that are offered to professionally credulous media figures/pundits. And indeed if one digs deep enough the bigotry comes out.
That's why it's okay to do things like slow-walk or even hamper aid to New York State after storms. It's okay to vow to cut wildfire aid to California, even though there are more Republicans there than any other state. It's actually also okay to demonize Democratic-led states en masse, use California as a metonym for all that is wrong in the USA. (A Democrat demonizing Republican state-based regimes of terror would be roundly criticized from this by all quarters).
So yes because Democratic politicians enfranchise and represent the minorities that the unreconstructed hate, the permission structure is there for rhetoric that sets off these "lone wolves," and the inciters...the stochastic terrorists...get to just whistle and walk away from the scene.

Yet the MSM either fails to confront cons when one of them engaged in hateful, and deceitful rhetoric, or when they do, all the con to deflect, and fail to follow up. It works, because they aren't held accountable for it.
The real story is how the MSM has failed us, ever since trump came down that golden escalator 11 years ago.
I also remember when this happened to Maxine Waters. Murc's Law casts a long shadow and that's one reasons Democrats *have* to be careful about what they say and what they do.
This is also why it's always the responsibility of Democratic politicians to "reach out" in this political system.
I guess this is one of those "shocked but not surprised" moments. The fact is that political violence has always been a tactic mostly of the right in this country, and it now has been overtly encouraged by MAGA adherents (especially the clown at the top) for over a decade now. They don't condemn it because they're fine with it, and frankly Americans grew numb to gun violence a long, long time ago. It's just another sad legacy we are going to have to live with long after Trump is gone.
Calling trump a clown implies that he's funny but harmless; and he's neither. Oh, we can laugh at his stupidity, but he's in a position where he can do a lot of harm to people, and has followed through with harming us all. He's an evil moron, exacerbated by his cognitive decline. When George III went mad, he was put away so as to not harm himself or others, and his oldest son, the future George IV, became Regent. We have the 25th Amendment, which clearly should be used, but no one who can trigger it will do so, because they are cowards, stupid, evil, or all three.
