Nick Fuentes is the neo Nazi white supremacist who infamously had that dinner party with Donald Trump and Kanye West at Mar a lago. Nick Fuentes is Latino.

Enrique Tarrio is a convicted seditionist who is a leader of the proud boys, a neofascist organization that promotes and engages in political violence. He is also Latino and the director of Latinos for Trump.

Why is it that MAGA accepts Latino white supremacists into their ranks but they can’t accept a Latina Snow White?

I would argue that Rachel Zegler playing Snow White in a Disney movie is a far better role model than either Fuentes or Tarrio. Why is she controversial but they aren’t? Why does she have to apologize for existing but they don’t?

I chuckled at the point about Snow White’s defining characteristic as being “extremely pretty,” because hey, let’s cast Gal Gadot in the role of someone who’s jealous of some other girl’s beauty!

Reminds me of:

Barbie: I’m not pretty anymore. I’m not ‘stereotypical Barbie’ pretty.

Narrator: Note to the filmmakers: Margot Robbie is the wrong person to cast if you want to make this point.

Though to be fair I think in the original story the evil Queen WAS beautiful but just very insecure so a beautiful actress like Gadot sort of makes sense.

TBH I think Zegler resembles Snow White well, even the shape of her face. Frankly, the original character is hard to find IRL – a skin tone that white with hair that black – without use of makeup to compensate for one or the other. Koreans might fit the bill...but the Right would burn down the studio if an Asian woman was cast as Snow White, even if her skin tone and hair naturally matches. That said, Peter Dinklage rightly said making a movie with dwarves living in a cave counters any progress the lead provides.

Anyway, kids don't GAF about Snow White. There's newer books with more interesting characters. Think Pinkalicious, Fancy Nancy, Bad Seed, Llama Llama... I don't know why Disney has to remake the oldies over and over and over and over and over and over again til we puke. It's like they're just gunning for a CGI award.

In the original movie, the dwarves lived in a cottage (not a cave) and went off each day to work in a mine.

I don’t see Disney being dumb enough to change this...but then, this *is* another live-action remake of a classic animated feature that didn't need any remake at all.

I had to kill some time last Saturday and stopped in to the movies to catch a flick (Last Breath, enjoyed it, was the only person in the theater so I could get up and stretch whenever I liked)

I saw a poster for SW and thought hey, maybe yeah! But the CGI thought makes me pause.

2. I don't need to see another lazy remake with over-the-top CGI

Whiteness is a construct - basically invented in the 17th century - so there is no such thing as anyone being objectively white, outside of cultural interpretations. Of course there are many people who are never seen as white, but the set of people who are universally recognized as white, across different cultural and ideological race codes, is a lot smaller than the set of people who think of *themselves* as white - or who are often assumed to be white by the people who never are.

For example, one of the more (softly) racist people I personally know is an Italian-American woman, who certainly thinks of herself as white - but her Anglo-American husband had actually discussed with his father the question of whether her non-whiteness was acceptable in the family.

Hispanics (even of purely Iberian heritage) and Jews are definitely outside the circle of people universally recognized as white.

Well, yes, that's how you weaponize exclusivity. I was speaking with a transphobe (she volunteers at the same soup kitchen I do, supposed to be no politics in the kitchen but she started it) so when she said her anti-trans b.s. I asked her how she thinks they enforce a trans ban in sports? Did she think about the girls who are "questioned" because of their dress, hair or behavior? How are they "protected" by this NONSENSE? Then the person that runs the group hauled her out and dressed her down for brininging politics into the kitchen, and later apologized to me that she had brought it up.

This woman is on the board, of course.

I’m curious how “dwarf” became an acceptable thing to call “midgets” (which apparently is no longer an acceptable term?). You’d think the connection to folklore would have made “dwarf” an outdated term. I’ll go with it if that’s what they prefer, but I imagine not long from now it’ll be considered a pejorative.

Let's let the experts speak about people with dwarfism:

https://www.betterhealth.vic.gov.au/health/conditionsandtreatments/dwarfism

Then there are also the mythological "folks" like fairies, trolls, dwarves, pixies, leprechauns, silkies, Lilliputians, Winkies, Munchkins, ogres, giants, mermaids, etc.

Yeah—a lot of “new terms” sound like they won’t age well.

And of course some just stick by usage—I’ve never liked “Latino” because of its religious connotations (apparently the French colonists used it originally to distinguish from English) but it’s pretty ingrained in the Hispanic community. And “Asian” means something different to the English (generally the Indian Subcontinent).

When I first moved to the UK from the US, I often bristled at the term "red Indian" and had to tell people that it is actually "Native American" (because "Indian" here means someone from India) and "red Indian" is, well, pretty insulting. I got a few eye rolls but there were a couple people who changed their terminology.

And I can't even describe the cringe I felt when I heard someone refer to a Chinese snooker player as a "Chinaman."

Its virtually impossible for anyone outside of Quebec to grok how the HELL that word could be seen as remotely offensive...And in the UK, 'fanny' will elicit a deeper blush than the 'C' word does

Language evolves.

Last year I visited France and the people I spoke with were very good humored in my terrible language skills, probably because I was trying so hard- but they definitely told me I "talk like a very old person"without modern usage or common word substitutuons. No one is walking around here saying "thee" "thou" or "dost."

And yes, defaulting to calling people what thay prefer is almost always correct. Take it with grace and thank your lucky stars that someone bothered to correct you- they generally won't bother if they think you're hopeless.

I think that's an oversimplification of people demanding that they be treated with equality and respect. I lived with a family in Ukraine in '92. The USSR had just fallen. Everyone called it "The Ukraine" then. When Russia invaded Ukraine, I was told that was vestigal language and I shouldn't use it anymore. I made a mental note, adjusted my wording and went on with my day. Being corrected is a natural part of communication and should be welcomed, as long as it isn't weaponized.

"Midget" is typically heard as a slur, with freak-show associations. "Dwarfism" is a modern clinical term, so "dwarf" is widely accepted on that basis. However the most-preferred endonym is "little people."

The advocacy group Little People of America says, "Such terms as dwarf, little person, LP, and person of short stature are all acceptable, but most people would rather be referred to by their name than by a label."

Shapiro is an asshole but his comments here are just weird. Both actresses are white and Jewish, and if he’s upset about Jews taking roles reserved for Christians he should learn something about “acting.” Believe it or not, Marlon Brando was a 48 year old midwestern WASP and not an aging Sicilian mobster when he portrayed Don Corleone so well that actual mobsters adjusted their real life behavior to match his on screen performance. I think Jews can do the acting thing too!

Ok maybe not Gadot—but she tries!
