I was pretty sure I was a SER subscriber, but evidently not, so I fixed that and will upgrade to paid ASAP. Also just donated to the Portland Playhouse - a true community treasure.

"This is America’s past, as well as its sordid present." So much of "American" popular culture IS Black popular culture. To really accept this, though,. would be to mourn the "America" illusion and actually *grieve* the harms of the past.

Equating people to farm equipment is just like calling people a distraction. As for promoting AI for anything, much less the arts, HELL NO! I read something a few months ago about someone wanting AI to do mundane chores so that they could concentrate on doing their artwork. I agree, although I'm not an artist, but I'd love for AI to do mundane chores so that I have more time to read.

White washing our history won’t make it go away. Authoritarian regimes always want to pretend like abuses never happened. Look at people erased from actual photographs in China.

As I’m sure you know but not everyone does, the white mania for preventing felons from voting even after they’ve served their sentence springs directly from the post-slavery enslavement you recount.

It's always a joy to learn more about the theater from these articles. But of course, media and art like this give a voice to those who are the targets of the unreconstructed so it's not surprising that it's been suppressed.

Also the lie about "elevating HBCUs and Hispanic-serving Institutions" is emblematic of the brazenness of this openly racist maladministration. Its just window-dressing that credulous gossip columnist "journalists" and podcasters can seize upon to say, "Well they can't be racist, they said they were going to elevate HBCUs and Hispanic-serving Institutions." Just how many works of theater or the arts in general have that as a subject compared to all other subjects? Does it mean the only thing that can be funded would be remakes of "A Different World?" (I'm sure there are others but they escape my mind).

I don't know this play so thanks for the introduction.

The AI competency b.s. is an obvious boondoggle, I guess the next round of funding for Sam Altman will come out of the funds we used to use for textbooks or tablets in the schools.

Making DC safe and beautiful probably is the the code for when they plan to go out with water trucks to hose all the blood off of the streets.

I'm so happy the production in Portland went on without the grant. I'll see if I can shake some change out of the piggy bank to make a donation.

Stay safe friends, and support live performance! Go find your joy, it will help sustain you through the fight.

“Making DC safe and beautiful” is probably code for “broken window policing” I’m thinking.
