Can’t blame the Republicans here—yet again Democrats nominated a turd whose “wacky” appeal turned out to hide a wild card. It’s not that he sometimes votes stupid (Pam Fucking Bondi???) but he keeps making public statements aimed at boosting GOP talking points. Yes we all owe Conor Lamb an apology.

And now we have to stomach this dipshit through 2028 and hopefully nominate someone else.

We just like that he is a rational, centrist. No ulterior motive as suggested.

Ulterior motive would be more like "AOC is the best Dem candidate for president".

Wow. There really are no winners here. Even if the crafty Republicans have an ulterior agenda ... Karma has a long memory. I hate to see this. I was really pulling for him. (Despite recent articles & questions, etc.)

Thank you for telling the story. No matter how hard to hear it, truth still matters. (Although sometimes you'd never know it.)

He doesn't even have a voicemail box. If you call him outside "business hours" you get instructed to call back another day. Even McCormick does us the courtesy of letting us leave him a message he can ignore.

Were it my husband behaving this way I’d be seriously concerned.

that is really sad, he fought back so hard while he was campaigning. strokes are a horrible thing; we have them in a lot of my family, and they terrify me.

The New York mag article was deeply unnerving.

Not a doctor or anything qualified to make a diagnosis, but when your wife and staff are "deeply concerned" about your mental and physical health that is "not being mean", that is running an intervention because they are last ditch desperately worried for you. More concerning to me is the Senator's tacit agreement that he is unable to do his job as witnessed by his stunning number of unexplained absences from votes and hearings.

Wow. Thanks for this excellent analysis, Stephen. I haven’t paid much attention to Fetterman lately, and totally missed that the GOP is cheering him on as he dissolves into a broken mess. Also, Tom Cotton can eat my entire ass.

I do think the Republicans could turn him and that's one reason Chuck Schumer and any other Democrat has the instinct to be careful. Though honestly with Dems on the back foot anyway, he should go ahead and do the inevitable Tricia Cotham move. The Senate is really just filled with ego, and it really hurts when the Democratic objective is some sort of constructiveness. It's much easier to have people like Fetterman who'll end up obstructing progress.

Great analysis. As for the primary, so what if Fetterman loses? And to a candidate not so pro-Israel as he is? Even if this candidate were as pro-Israel, or even more pro-Israel, as Fetterman is, the repubs will paint the candidate as anti-Israel. Dems should be prepared for that, but they never do prepare for obvious repub smears and lies. And when they come, they whine and accept the repub framing, just like the MSM does.

Yes, Fetterman is in trouble, and kudos to his staff and wife for sounding the alarm. I hope that he gets the help that he needs. The Dems are in trouble, but not because of Fetterman. It's because, except for a few, they don't fight back against the repub lies and smears.

I will say this...in that sense the Dems in office do follow the lead of the Democratic rank-and-file. Anytime a "fighter" is in trouble Dems are either silent or grabbing clout off the troubles. I want to see these Dems full-throated defending Letitia James from the latest smears for example.
