“most of his support would come from young, mostly white liberals who drink craft cocktails and probably saw Oh, Mary! at least twice”. I’m not young but don’t come for us cocktail lovin Oh Mary fans.
I don’t know if it’s a sign, but in my town about an hour NW of NYC, a progressive slate of Democrats beat a slate parachuted in by machine Dems and real estate developers 60/40. Their leader is a woman under 30 who has AOC energy.
"That’s equally true of the Democrats who knew better but supported Cuomo anyway, either for political expedience or just plain fear. (State Sen. Jessica Ramos claimed she endorsed Cuomo because she was afraid Donald Trump would pick on New York if Mamdani’s the mayor. That’s hardly a profile in courage.)" Nice!
I dint know whether this means a revolt against the Democratic establishment but I hope it does. The party needs a major overhaul and rallying around Cuomo who is not just beset with personal scandal but was also lackluster as a governor just shows how much of an old boys network the establishment has become. The sooner Clinton, Schumer et al are left in the dust, the better.
It just reinforces that the establishment is weak and feckless and can’t strategize worth a damn. They could have gotten behind Adrienne Adams or Brad Lander. They chose Cuomo and now they will likely rally behind Eric Adams, a crook who is indebted to Trump.
Just rotted through and through. At a time like this the country needs one sane, functional party that can stand up to the fascist cult, crush the party that has genuflected to it, and address the serious challenges the country faces. Instead we have this gang that has no vision, clings to focus groups and consultants of dubious worth, refuses to retire its aged personnel, and cannot even begin to appeal outside its bubble.
I have my reservations about Zohran. I worry about his youth and inexperience, and like you, I don't agree with some of his proposals (or don't think they are feasible). However, fuck Cuomo. I'd rather take a chance on someone new.
I was stunned by the victory, but I also think the heat wave kept some older voters home.
I agree with @Charlotte Clymer who ranked Adrienne Adams and Brad Lander above Mandami. I probably would’ve done the same. I have no idea why the Democratic Party was so feckless and morally bankrupt to rally behind Cuomo instead, whose tenure as governor was a disaster
I went back and forth, but I put Zohran 1, Lander 2, Adrienne Adams 3. I put Zohran at 1, mostly to spite Cuomo. I thought he had the best shot to win so I thought it was a decent strategy.
Now I don't think Cuomo's "independent" plan will work mainly because he is a jerk, BUT.
The job is not finished yet. People need to keep top eye.
An important consideration is there needs to be rampant pushback whenever people start going "ZOMG crime is terrible" and "OMG someone's going to be nice to CRIMINALS" (who are bad people as long as they're not a 34-count felon pricktator of course). This was a successful ingredient of defeating a primary winner in my town via write-in campaign. Cuomo won't win on that.
But an actual Republican could. It is not impossible for a Republican to win.
Mamdani needs to make sure to cross every T and dot every I in this campaign. And make sure the personal and professional life are in tip top shape and there are no surprises. This happened to the primary winner in my city last time around and contributed to the loss...to the point where this person is now used as a shibboleth for "easy on criminals." Right out of the sadopopulist playbook.
I would add that none of the candidates running in that race were remotely inspiring. Just more of the same. This race has a lot of energy and character to it. I got the same vibe from Mamdani's campaign as I did from AOCs. Same kind of energy, same opposition to the fossilized centrists
This is great news! As for anyone afraid that TACO would pick on NYC if Mamdani is the mayor, where have they been? He already picks on NYC because NYC hates him. More accurately, he TRIES to pick on NYC, but NYC doesn't care. State Senator Ramos is clearly a coward, which is sad, because we need all elected officials to be courageous at this time.
The pricktator is going to pick on NYC anyway...or any large Democratic city. They all get used as a demonym for Bad to tickle the egos of the cultists in so-called "Real America." If a disaster hits any of these cities, or any other calamity, we are all on our own.
The way the pricktator is abusing Los Angeles is the guide for this.
The same bigoted choads with "deeply held religious beliefs" who see electing a Mooslem "dangerous," have no problem voting for a convicted felon, rapist and insurrectionist with no demonstrated religious or moral values.

I agree! I might have also done the same to ensure Cuomo lost

Let's see how this goes! Good job Mr. Mamdani!
"Republicans will predictably claim that Mamdani’s win means the Democratic Party has been co-opted by commies"
No, they will claim Democrats are 100% Pro-Hamas.
This really is a big fucking deal.
Has Ramaswamy challenged him to a rap battle yet?
C'mon, don't laugh!
Has anyone made the "You Don't Mess With the Zohran" joke yet?
Also, fuck Cuomo. Good riddance.
2 thoughts arise:
1) Ranked choice voting is a good method for neutralizing the dominating effect of big money and political favoritism and cronyism.
2) A charismatic campaigner can transcend political labels.
Good points! Though I do also wanna point out that Eric Adams got in due to ranked choice.

True! No system is foolproof, but this one levels the field a playing field a bit. Voters are given a wider say in the ultimate candidate.
