Just tell your children that jesus loves them and his judgment will make it all better. After all it’s just how things are. Amen

Just.

Can’t we do SOMETHING different than what we’ve been doing?

I have a great idea. Let’s not just vote for the Black lady. Let’s vote for ALL THE BLACK LADIES.

As a rule I don’t think it’s helpful to generalize, but we are socialized to favor and more or less blindly vote for our reps based upon gender and skin color- let’s goddamn fucking change it up.

We did this now for long enough. Time to change it up

Another Republican-endorsed mass murder. The GOP are fine with this. They have always been fine with this. It's about time we hang this millstone around their necks.

Don't be nice. Why are you in favor of continued child murder, Senator/Congressman/Governor? Because it is YOU and YOUR PARTY that are letting this happen.

Guns are the problem. If you want to address this problem, vote Democratic. If you're fine with this, if you accept that school shootings are a fact of life nowhere in the world except the good old US of A, if you're happy with the status quo and the physical and emotional toll it's taking on our kids, vote Republican and own it. That simple.

Whenever you hear--which is literally every time--that it's "too soon to talk about gun control" after a fatal shooting, I wonder whether anyone would say after a fatal plane crash "it's too soon to discuss airline safety". Such a dumb point, and the media keeps letting the gun fetishists make it unchallenged, over and over again.

The media only print what corporations think is good for making money.

Selling more guns?, good for profits, selling less guns?, bad for profits.

Government child care?, cuts into profits.

Criticizing thump? cuts into profits (with a side order of death threats.)

Humanity? The rich don’t even like their own kids.

I know you counsel against despair in this piece, but without some major unforeseen change in the composition of the governments of at least 34 states I don't see any chance of it changing in the lifetime of anyone living today. We have an active and vigorous death cult in charge of way too much of this country. We have churches that literally worship AR-15s. We can't pass an Equal Rights Amendment in 2024, so why on Earth should I think that we'll pass a major reform or repeal of the Second Amendment any time in the 21st century? And anyway, who would we get to enforce any ban on guns that did pass? It's not like the police would go along with it. No, that ship sailed somewhere along about 1900 when Colt and Winchester and the rest started selling guns as home defense and a symbol of manliness. I don't care how many "common sense" gun laws get passed. It won't end until we seize and melt down all the goddamn guns.

I think most police would enforce the law. We don't need to repeal the Second Amendment. Reasonable regulations, up to and including full bans on some types of weapons, are fully compatible with the Second - according to Antonin Scalia in the Heller opinion.

Well now we're going to get backbenchers wearing AR-15 pins now.

I'm just so tired of this happening but we know this is going to continue. A score of innocent children being murdered in their classroom wasn't enough to stop this.

Because the real reason for these stockpiles of war is that these people have a fantasy of having the government collapse so they can go hunting people. They are exercising the same right created to make slave patrols effective.

Specifically Black and Hispanic. Probably Middle-Eastern people as well.

The AR-15 is for hunting people. And the people that stockpile them have always had rights in America.

The one consolation is that the father who armed this little shit with an AR-15 is at least going to be tried. And we have the little shit alive. But what a waste. What a damn waste.

Yes, try the father, give the kid the mental health he wanted before being gifted the gun.

GIVE ALL THE KIDS THE MENTAL HEALTH and maybe they won’t grow up to need guns to feel important. GIVE ALL THE KIDS THE MENTAL HEALTH AND SAFETY instead of the fucking prison pipeline. Ugh. can’t we just do better?

If ANY of the GOP leaders who offer thoughts and prayers had their children killed in school you’d wonder if they would still feel the same. No one ever asks them that. Much like men, who JUST NOW see how important reproductive healthcare for their partners are, it should not have to come to that. Yet apparently that’s what they are waiting for. I hope they come around before it’s too late to save their own babies. I certainly don’t wish that for them to be clear.

No one needs an automatic weapon ever. Can’t they just compromise and get rid of them?

Expand full comment
Erin's avatar

These aren't even automatic. God knows how that's been missed by the GOP and SCOTUS but fully automatic weapons are still illegal to own. But a modern semi-automatic weapon can still be fired way too many times a minute for any person not in combat in a war zone to need one.

Since SCROTUS declared the bump stock ban illegal, semi automatic weapons can be made automatic again. Just as the founders intended.

One thing I find interesting is when Trump had his close call the GOP wore bandages over their ear in solidarity with the victim.

When it’s a school shooting the GOP wears AR-15 lapel pins is solidarity with the gun.

Something tells me we won’t see anyone wearing bandages in honor of yesterday’s victims.

Good point. The Gospels tell us that when Jesus was arrested, one of his disciples, probably Peter, took out a sword and sliced off one of the arresting officer's ear. Jesus rebuked Peter and healed the man's ear. People like the guy who said that worship a gun-toting Jesus, ready to mow down anyone they don't agree with.

I like to pull Bible quotes where Jesus refuses earthly power, to these idjits who think they are called to force others to their religious rules. Honestly, you have to NOT read the gospels in order to not realize that Jesus wasn't seizing political power.
