You exhibit your own kind of manichean view- as fascist as MAGA.

I live in Michigan and am a long-time Whitmer supporter. Her distaste for every second spent with that loathsome shit-stain was palpable in every photo, every video. Big Gretch did not sell out, or capitulate. She was not owned, or made a fool of.

What she did was make a move towards sealing a deal that has been in motion for years, despite having to deal with HIM. She put the needs of her state before politics and endured every skeevy comment, wafts from his diaper, and the touch of his tiny doughy hand.

Thanks for taking one for the team, Gretch!

Are we really in a position to purity test democrats?

We lost.

We need everyone possible in the tent. That includes those reprehensible moderates.

The left thinks it has the luxury of kicking people out. You people are insane.

The purity tests are a total turn off.

And the Bulwark spends a lot of time criticizing Dems when they should be criticizing Republicans.

NO democrats should vote for ANY republican bill or nominee. Jeez! Have we learned nothing!?

What was Whitmer supposed to do? Trump didn’t try to hug the men. why are we blaming Whitmer for his inappropriate behavior?

The only good reason to collaborate is if you're building a faulty exhaust port into the Death Star.

(IRL example: Jacques Stosskopf, quietly fed info to the allies and built flaws into the base he was working in until his resistance cell got compromised. )

I still can't believe Zelensky signed this. I forgot where I read this yesterday, but whoever wrote it said it's not like you just go into Ukraine and dig up these minerals. It could take years. It's just the optics of Z agreeing to anything with this Tangerine Tyrant. Every day I lose more and more hope.

Why anyone expected the Federalist Society’s favorite Democrat to do anything about Trump is beyond me. It appears to have slipped from our collective memory that Obama appointed him to the Supreme Court figuring he was conservative enough to get past a GOP Senate. Would have worked too, if McConnell hadn’t gone batshit crazy and decided to burn the whole thing down.

On the plus side, Democrats have narrowed the field for the 2028 primaries. On the minus side there may not be a free election by then, and it may not matter because no good politicians have emerged in the party.

It’s maddening watching people try to cozy up to this guy because it always backfires and yet they never learn. Yes it sucks when he abuses his power to harm you but he’s going to harm you anyway and standing up to him at least gives you a chance to punch his glass jaw. He’ll betray Whitmer and Fetterman just like he betrayed the rest.

The Democrats are a broken useless party and the sooner we replace them with smart pols who have the common sense to lead an opposition the better.

Booker added himself to the list of Don't-bother-running-in-2028 Democrats. The other prominent Democrat on that list is Newsom. Fuck this mediocre men. Like, I know the Democratic electorate isn't going to nominate a woman or a person of color again in my lifetime, but Booker could have pulled it off like Obama, and now he's just an empty suit.

Preach it, Stephen! I've been thinking of Neville Chamberlain when reading about Dems collaborating with trump, but Vichy France is a better comparison.

You call it collaboration - I call it using him. He got played by Whitmer for the benefit of Michigan's citizens- she didn't praise him or any such action. Thinking people KNOW she didn't do it to present any sense of normality- we know he is not normal nor his actions and policies.

She's gotten nothing yet. trump is notorious for reneging on deals, even ones that he makes himself.

I repeat: Trump never does anything that doesn't directly benefit him *and* damages his opposition.

Look at how Trump views foreign policy (esp. his constant complaints about NATO). He doesn't see deals as situations where people might mutually benefit. No, one party has to screw over the other to "win." His treatment of Whitmer clearly shows that he believes he's "beaten" her.

You can argue that she played Trump and he only "thinks" he's dominated her in this arrangement. That seems like magical thinking. If we're to have gained anything from the past 10 years, it should be that we realize what Trump is.

The ONLY reason people will "think' Whitmer caved is because of propaganda like yours- if you actually stopped saying she caved and normalized- there'd be no reason to think it- you are putting YOUR spin on the events.

NO NO NO- It was not a 'surrender' by Whitmer- she saved jobs and brought money into the state by convincing the blowhard to keep the air base open- if anything, it was Trump who got played.

I mentioned Vichy France for a reason, but even the Empire Strikes Back provides a relatively accessible example of what happens when you collaborate with fascists.

Think about the photos of the Duke of Windsor with Hitler. Decades from now, no one will remember the deals made.

Also, Trump didn't get "played." He's the president. He benefits directly from the appearance of normality, especially if it promotes his false image as a master deal maker. He's evil but he's also consistent: He never does anything unless it benefits him.
