How will restoring mammoths, which went extinct thousands of years ago, help the modern ecosystem? Wouldn’t it make more sense to put efforts towards shoring up current struggling populations? Right, right, not as sexy.
Thanks for the explainer, Stephen. I was wondering what all the fuss was about but have been too busy doomscrolling all week to stop and read all about it. Yay science, I guess?
Playing God never ends well - not in real life, and not in fiction.
Sorry for being cranky, but my father is in hospice care, and according to the doctor, it's a matter of days, not weeks, for him. He's 89, and has had a good life, but he's tired but comfortable and at peace. Still, it's hard seeing a loved one go.
He made the decision, as his mind is fine, but his body is tired, and he just can’t eat or drink. His body has said “it’s time,” and he is at peace with the decision. The family is all making peace with his decision, and showing how much he is loved. Thank you!
I can't get past the fact that there are six named direwolves in Game of Thrones and they named their clone Khaleesi (not one of the six, for non GoT peeps). That makes no fucking sense.
One very interesting thing is happening on its own, and that is the recent phenomenon of offspring between wolves and coyotes. Which is happening naturally in the wild because of human encroachment that pushes them toward each other where before they didn't really cross paths. In this case we get hybrid vigor. and an insane amount of variety. Since each offspring even from the same litter would be getting genes more or less randomly from two different species.
"Although, I admit I’d enjoy seeing a crocodile who could walk upright, especially if he wore a sideways baseball cap."
Brilliant, Stephen

The headline alone makes it worthwhile.
Grateful Dead had a Dire Wolf in 1970, long before GoT:

"abomination unto the lord" - seriously
They never apparently understood Jurassic Park I guess. Maybe they could make domesticated red pandas. Meh.
"Besides, a Siberian Husky is “something close” to a dire wolf. "
So, for that matter, is a Chihuahua....
Yes, I understand all of that, but... PUPPPIES!!!!

I'm sure it is strengthening him emotionally that you are all able to make peace with it. Take good care of yourself through it all.
Hugs to you, Linda. Yes, it is hard.
I hope they eat the faces off these tech bros and broettes.

Thanks, Stephen. Now I have to go listen to “Desperados Under the Eaves” and weep
Queue up Steady Rain while you're at it.

Romulus and Remus also aren’t wolves; they were humans raised by a she-wolf.
