Well, it certainly is interesting to read the WaPo headlines that have completely abandoned 'Dems in Disarray!' and 'What color is Melania going to wear to Trump's Inauguration in January?'
Totally OT but I’ve been following you (SER) on Wonkette forever and now here and my ADHD has just today allowed me to realize that your moniker is The Play Typer Guy and not The Player Type Guy 🤦♀️😂
When the news dropped, I had the feels of the excellent Rep Crockett, but soon discovered the knot in my stomach, ever-present lately, had loosened without any effort of mine, and that a heady wave of optimism replaced it. Not sure why, and don’t care, right now. Will ride the wave and continue writing letters to voters for Vote Forward.
I do think that if, as has been suggested by many informed/intelligent peeps, Big Money was a prime mover here, President Harris and a Blue Congress should explore serious campaign finance reforms.
I'm all in for Kamala but I do not like how Joe was stabbed in the back to get there. (To be clear, I don't think Kamala was part of it. But Schiff, Moulton et. al. can, in the words of Eleanor Shellstrop, eat my farts.)
Considering Kamala had nothing to do with it, she could use this to her advantage--take up the mantle of avenging Biden from the media scavengers that have taken cheap shots at him, and carrying the torch into the election. Channel that anger towards supporting her.
Spot fucking on on all counts. I still don't completely understand the calculus of the progressive caucus in the house and Senate. I mean those are my peeps. To find myself agreeing with Pelosi and Schumer over my own peeps? I still don't know what's going on there. Anyone have any ideas?
That being said I understand that Fetterman is as progressive as we initially thought, but still.
I understand the anger a lot of Biden fans feel over his declining to run--my mother expressed that sentiment just yesterday morning before the news--here's a decent man with a great first-term record having his own party ask him to step down. But it's not about fair--it's about the hard headed decision of how best to beat the closest thing we have to a modern Hitler. Biden choosing to put aside his own ambition--as well as his own belief that he could beat Trump again--just shows how much better a president he is.
Harris and her team now have a challenge to pull off a winning campaign in 90 days--can she establish herself as a moderate and appeal to swing voters, hold on to the Biden fans, and energize the young and nonwhite voters where Biden was slipping? It's certainly possible, and hopefully they're up for it. This is the moment for a big push.
So according to the dumbest of the GOP, this invalidates millions of votes, but Biden getting the nomination 4 years ago didn’t invalidate my vote for Warren? How exactly do they think that works?
I think this scuppers the Republicans' campaign strategy- they were all set to just keep bashing Biden for being old and corrupt (he loaned money to his brother to buy a car, how he held onto his job after that is completely beyond me, I can only attribute it to the corruption endemic in DC. And that's not even starting on the fact that he had a son- an actual son, for god's sake- and the American people were expected to just carry on as though this wasn't a thing.)
I have no idea what strategy they'll employ against a candidate who is Black and female. I think they'll be scratching their heads over that one for a while, too.
Lord Hawley Hawley is spite-posting. « If you can’t encourage an insurrection without running like a jack-rabbit when they come your way, then you can’t be president. »
You’ll allow a minute or so, I think, to dwell on the unfairness of this. I’m with Jasmine and Fetterman. And only a chucklehead like Sorkin anticipates a convention that will be free of blood. Anyway, we don’t get a vote. Of course, we’ll line up behind Kamala, but this was ugly and laden with MSM fuckery.
“He’s not FDR. He just can’t convince voters that he’s fit to serve another term.” That’s the money shot, right there.
This is the best post-mortem I’ve read all day. Thank you so much for this, Stephen. Very even-handed and wonderfully written. It helped me try to get my head straightened out.

Thanks! Glad you're here.

Thank you for your insightful commentary.

There's a lot of upside to this move, but it involves a lot of shit people suddenly not being shit people, so I have my doubts.

Not to mention Steve motherfuckin' Schmidt.
I knew the Never Trumpers would show their hand eventually.
LETS-GO HAR-RIS!
And here's to you, Mister Robinson. Thanks for the column.
Kamala is going to kill it! Fuck yeah!
Dammit, Stephen, that last line made me cry.
I am scared about the lateness of this change, and losing (most of) the power of incumbency. But I'm all in for President Harris. Let's do this.

I especially like the MTG “brass gall” phrase!
Thanks so much!
