At this point the Democrat I would support for 2028 would be one who bluntly and clearly promised to jail and prosecute from Day One every member of this administration including Trump and his grifter family, plus Elon, and when asked “what if Trump pardons them” say “don’t give a shit, his pardons are illegitimate, we will fight that out in court”. It is the complete lack of consequences from the first term that led to the looting and abuses of the second.

And I guess Republicans got so mad at refugees coming here from failed banana republics that they decided to turn this country into one just to spite them.

I think it prudent we remember Graham Chapman’s words, “You don’t vote for kings!”

Henry VIII was of course a horrid individual, but you gotta give some credit to the guy for having told the Catholic church to fuck off.

We have gone so far beyond the bounds of normal that there seems to be no point in even mentioning each new atrocity, each new breach of historical protocol, each new assault on law and democratic principle. If we manage to stumble through and survive into a new more sane administration, it will take years of effort to undo all the harm that has been done.

As I see it, the only hope is to somehow attain an all-Democratic led administration for at least 2 terms, and right now the chances of that happening seem pretty remote. I hate to be pessimistic, but there is such a large contingent of idiocy willing to grant credence to utter dishonesty and stupidity and outright greed that I can't imagine turning it around.

We had such a respite during the Obama years that I had hope that the outright benefits of better healthcare, and a period without relentless scandal would make people realize how much better we could all live. Sadly, I underestimated the amorality of power-hungry political evil (looking at you here Mitch) which obstructed those efforts at every turn.

It's ironic that the major efforts that I have supported during my lifetime have now largely been accepted as correct, even though they were vigorously opposed by Republicans at every step. Starting when I was in college and stridently opposed the Vietnam War, then it was considered anti-American and now it is obvious what a mistake we made as a country. Add to that opposing the war on drugs and advocating for legalizing marijuana, now again obviously correct. Then opposing the invasion of Iraq (remember Freedom Fries?). We went ahead and wasted hundreds of thousands of lives, ours and theirs, and trillions of dollars for no net gain. And now imagine what good could have been done with all that money?

All I can say at this point, is that if we are somehow to progress as a society as I hoped so long ago, the arc of that progress will take much, much longer to achieve than I could then imagine. The forces of chaos and opposition are significantly more powerful than I knew. It will take more generations into the future than I will see. I hope it will happen, but it ain't guaranteed.

I mean yes it's illegal but only Democrats can have accountability. It also helps that he has his modern Taney Court led by Justice Balls-and-Strikes to give him whatever he wants.

Could anyone imagine a Supreme Court—ANY Supreme Court—giving a Democrat an "Official Immunity" gift? Or even be able to quash a ruling on black-letter-law, like an actual Constitutional Amendment—the 14th Amendment...had a Democrat engaged in an overthrow of the government like on January 6?

Of course that latter is fanciful as January 6 was an insurrection by the unreconstructed. Had there been Democrats in that crowd we all know they'd have been mowed down.

He claims to be religious and he claims to be a friend of the Jewish people. But it's perfectly OK to accept a $400 million bribe from Iran-backed Qatar? There's no end to his grifting, even if it means betraying those he claims to be his friends. NO JEW should be OK with this, eh Bibi??

You know, when I was reading Mantel's "Cromwell trilogy" I was approaching the end of the last book, and though I knew how it ended, while turning the last few pages, there was a part of me rooting for the protagonist to make it. I read slower and slower, to prolong my enjoyment in the moment, as if there were only a few bites left of a delicious meal.

I've found in these last couple of months that I am taking more time at home, making sure I'm seeing friends, talking with family, enjoying the things I've worked for, and lamenting some of the things that I haven't yet been able to do, change, make. Reading this, I wonder, is it all about to go away? Are the numbered days of relative comfort, about to disappear like so many unnamed migrants into a forever slave-prison? Now that we're sending planes of people to be rendered to Lybia, where humans are trafficked to the highest bidder, what is left? Will there be a fight? Are these the final days of peace? Or are they already behind me?

He may be living like a king, but which one will he die like? Quite a few kings were executed by their fed up subjects, others murdered by nobles, and still others imprisoned and died in prison - either outright murdered or tortured or starved to death. Or maybe like George III, who went mad, although I don't know what he actually died of. My point is - it ain't always good to be king.

And he should read the the parable of Lazarus, a poor man (named for one of Jesus' best friends) and of a rich man (not even named). In life, the rich man failed to help the poor man, and when he died, he went to hell, but Lazarus went to heaven.
