I've spent a lot of time at Jazzfest in the past, and as you know, it's an international experience. I've met the most interesting people sitting in the Blues tent or the Jazz tent and chatting with the people near me with whom I would have never come in contact in any other context.
If you want to step out of the quarter and travel across the bridge to the West Bank for a crawfish feast, try Sal's on Barataria. Not fancy, but great food.
My friend TL was meeting some friends for a weekend in NO years back and actually stumbled upon a free concert outdoors somewhere that was part of Jazzfest. She was pleasantly surprised at her good fortune. Enjoy your time away SER!
Up I your neck of the woods at the Ashland Independent Film Festival. It too is a nice break from all the crap going on with the exception that the movies I’ve seen seem to parallel this time and should serve as a cautionary tale.
JazzFest is such a wonderful time in the city, I hope you really enjoy it. That mango ice treat is a favorite of mine, and if you happened to sneak a little rum into the festival grounds, they go quite well together.
"sadist and socialite (not an unusual combination at the time)" or now, for that matter.
Also, don't bury the thumbnail lede. Where *is* the best beignet in New Orleans?

Have a great time!
Well, here I thought I was in for a nice light travel post and I've had enough internet for the week.

Enjoy NOLA (and JazzFest!) The only time I ever got to go there was prior to Katrina and it was a great time.

I'm going to vote Isley. Probably less chances to see them in the future.
My choice, too.
