Great article. I barked out a laugh at "Yet racists online are behaving as if Juliet were an actual historical figure like Ariel the mermaid."!

Hey did you know that the excellent Chesapeake Shakespeare Company is staging Romeo and Juliet with similar casting, set in 1970s Baltimore? Tickets are on sale now! https://www.chesapeakeshakespeare.com/shows-tickets/rj/

Anybody complaining about this casting couldn't care less about Shakespeare, has probably never seen the play performed and never had any intention of going this time around either.

I've been thinking about your subtitle (is that the right word? Or is it like an epigraph? I don't mean to mis-identify...)

Does hate make you stupid? Or does stupid make you hate? Or both? Is this a reversible reaction where the reaction rates are about the same?

It's a seriously chicken-and-egg question...are bigots morons, or are morons bigots? Does it matter?

Excuse me, I thought “conservatives” were all supposed to be color blind. What happened to judging people by the content of their character not the color of their skin?

Yeah, I don’t get this, either. It’s a universal love story. Can this girl act or no? That’s the only thing that matters.

It was a story dreamed up by a great writer in a few days. If Shakespeare couldn’t have it ready in time of opening the owners of the Globe were to perform another writers work. This is history and documented history too. You bozos need a life.

This is a bizarre version of the kind of zero sum thinking they always engage in. They act as if any racially novel rendition of a familiar work somehow erases every past rendition, imagining that it narrows the cultural universe rather than expands it.

They also complained about the cast of Hamilton. Let them bitch and moan, theatre goers are what matters.

Last week in the West End I saw these two in Moulin Rouge:

It was so good my brain chemistry changed. Loved it!

OH FFS. I have nothing more profound to say because OMG FICTION. As in fiction is fiction, but also RACE IS MADE UP FICTION. It's not a biological reality it's just a stupid human trick invented to justify kidnapping humans and stealing their lives. Can we please have nice things now?

It blows my mind that this is 2024, and this shit still goes on. When are white people (im white) going to get over themselves!?! Who the fuck do they think they are? I’ll never understand it.

Brilliant as always, Stephen. Unfortunately, the people we're talking about are probably too dim to recognize the burn.

Remember before the internet, when you only had to deal with your "local" dumb bigots? It's hard to really process the total number of people in the world willing to make comments that are equally stupid AND racist. And I don't think they feel any qualms. Sigh.
