Remember how soon after 9/11, Giuliani, who was the darling of the national media, America's Mayor, said that maybe we should put off the NYC Mayoral election and just let him stay on "for awhile" and just about the entire city responded by telling him to get fucked? That's when I knew for sure NYC was going to be all right.
Didn't blame every Muslim though. While I grew up on 80's action movies, unlike others of my generation, I realized that not everyone with brown skin as a terrorist or gang member. Most people just wanted to live a good life, raise a family, and worship in peace.
But I refused to consider that a thoughtful, measured response was needed. Refused to see or learn then that my country... the good guys... had been playing around with people's lives for a very long time. Didn't learn then, but later that my country didn't want me to know who exactly had supported and financed 9/11 and whether the "diplomats" they helped escape included any of them.
Nothing justified killing three thousand innocent people and ruining tens of thousands of other lives.
But instead of calmly bringing the people responsible to justice, we responded by killing tens of thousands of innocent people and ruining the lives of many more. By the time Biden ended the last of it, we were sending our children to go and fight a war that those children had not been alive to see the start of. Pro-life of us, wasn't it?
Then America got collectively angry at Biden for stopping it.
People wanted blood, not rationality. Vengeance, not justice. Think about that too long, it starts to make you uncomfortable, as it should. Since then, we don't even have to wonder any more. Too many Americans would and did resort to terrorism and they didn't even have decades of grievances to motivate them. They just lost an election.
Lot of lessons to take away from what happened September 11th, 2001 and January 6th, 2021. One of them is that maybe instead of being concerned or hateful towards peaceful people, we ought to be more concerned about the people who easily embrace violence and hatred.
Thank you for your post. I would only add that Biden abided by an agreement put in place by Donald Trump 1.0 for leaving the country, which co-opted American media never seem to mention. I only wish they had begun to get helpers and allies in Afganistan out well ahead of the last days, and that they had not chosen 9/11 for the actual final day of pulling out of the country. The other big regret is the number of American military service personnel who were wounded and killed that evac day.
