It’s not the purpose of your article but thank you for mentioning The Avengers TV Show. My wife and I have gone back and watched the 51 episodes where Patrick Macnee aka John Steed and Diana Rigg aka Emma Peel were together from 1965-1967. If you have the time, you might enjoy those years of The Avengers.
This is where in my alternative universe where Democrats were a competent party they’d be hitting every media outlet with “Trump caused these deaths and he will cause many more”. Make it the media narrative, no subtlety, no leaving it to the public to connect the dots, flat out charge the demented asshole with murder because that’s what he fucking did. Make every Republican who is not today voting to remove that freak own it, make them excuse it, make them say “sorry but dead Texans is a fine trade for saving a few million dollars from NOAA oh and you guessed it, my penis doesn’t work.” Crush the fuckers into dust.
Or pull a Schumer and hope Republicans discover shame and spoiler alert, they won’t.
I also wanted to comment on your inclusion of the Georgia congressperson's recent proposal:
"Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene posted on Saturday morning that she was “introducing a bill that prohibits the injection, release, or dispersion of chemicals or substances into the atmosphere for the express purpose of altering weather, temperature, climate, or sunlit intensity. It will be a felony offense.”"
As I understand the language of this bill, it seems to target greenhouse gases. If that was her intention, count me in. But, she is an outspoken climate change denier, so it's doubtful she thinks this bill could do what I think it could do. But, who knows. She may oppose the Green New Deal, but wants to save the planet by imprisoning everyone guilty of releasing green house gases. It could be the Big House for the Green House bill.
The evidence is indisputable that "injection, release, or dispersion" of greenhouse gases have "alter(ed) weather, temperature, climate, or sunlit (sic) intensity" which have already caused catastrophic effects. The only question is will everyone involved, from the fossil fuel industry to the end use consumers be charged with felony offenses? Are the charges federal? Is each incident of driving a car, or running your AC, or blow drying your hair considered a separate charge? It seems we are going to need a lot more gulags.
Lives were lost. Innocent lives. Let’s not politicize this tragedy. It was an unusual event that caught everyone unawares. The terrain is difficult to get to along with limited communication. Not sure if TX has the emergency alerts that we get here in CA. Let these people grieve. Don’t turn it into another Sandy Hook causing yet more emotional trauma and distress. Godspeed to all those who have suffered.
“Flood” is actually a surname so a Republican with the name running on an anti trans platform isn’t inconceivable. Maybe they’ll toss paper towels too! (Also: Kerr County judge Rob Kelly said in in an interview…)
It is wrong for any Democrats to single out the people who were drowned in this flood as somehow getting what they had coming to them. People all over the world will suffer and die as a result of cruel, fascist MAGA policies. People who voted against MAGA policies will also suffer, and perhaps, die.
These summer camps in Texas are very profitable businesses, earning millions of dollars annually. The small investment in a couple of weather alert radios might have been lifesaving. I read about one nearby camp, where staff was monitoring alerts from the NWS, and began evacuating the kids after the flash flood warning was received just after 01:00 am. All the kids and camp staff survived, though the camp was destroyed.
Having lived in Texas for a few years, and having family who still live there, I can attest that many Texans are deeply suspicious of scientific expertise. This is a fairly common, but strongly held belief. They don't pay attention to warnings from the NWS, because they think it must be a deep state plot. They won't demand public safety installations to protect their own lives, because freedumb. As President Obama once said, they are deeply angry, and distrustful, so they cling to their guns and religion instead. But none of this means they deserve to suffer.
I don't know how we reach people who fear and distrust science and evidence. But saying they are getting what they deserve is not just unhelpful. It's cruel and hateful.
I am just shocked with these horrific tragedies, and now what we have to look forward to is "look for the hurters." Every tragedy is an opportunity for a sadopopulust or a propagandist to inflict more pain. I guess at least the pricktator didn't deny the aid. So people will get help in Texas.
In New York, when we get hit by a disaster we shall not be so fortunate...without concessions.
My wife was also forced to attend those indoctrination camps in the flood-prone Texas hill country as a kid. Poor little girls, they will never have the chance to grow and wisen up, like my wife did.
With that said, it's hard for me to extend my sympathy to their Republican-voting parents.
“My support for desperate, suffering people isn’t transactional.”
Thank you, Stephen. Mine isn’t either. I grieve every day for the Ukrainian people, the people in Gaza, and the folks in our own country who are being rounded up, exiled, and disappeared. Ron Filipkowski’s remark to Texans that “this is what you get” really disappointed me. (But this attitude seems characteristic of the way Meidas Touch is now shaping their issuances. When criticized for his post, he doubled down and defensively lashed out at the criticism.)
This increased tendency to blame everything awful that’s now happening on “the red states” — the enemy that we have now delineated as the democracy-ending culprits — is not only unhelpful; it’s a way too handy us-vs-them tool. And living with the stress, fear, and anxiety that we all have now seems to compel us to find one.
As you point out, “If we’re condemning almost 5 million Harris voters in Texas, then we should condemn ourselves because America collectively re-elected Trump.” To those who say “I didn’t vote for this”, I completely understand the rage. I didn’t vote for it, either, and I’m a red-state resident. Yes, my state has more than its share of MAGAts and other unsavory, idiotic sociopaths. I don’t want to die in a horrific natural disaster, but I really don’t want them to, either.
Another knockout post. You always put what I’m thinking into words. Grateful for you.
“it’s a way too handy us-vs-them tool.” THIS right here. Bless you for knowing the right response. Your kindness is one of the reasons that I really appreciate your sane, measured and humane response.
The kids definitely didn't choose this, but it's harder and harder to muster sympathy for the parents when I see a photo taken at a prayer service of an overly kitted-out, tacti-cool pickup truck with the post assassination-attempt photo of Trump painted on the hood. They still don't deserve it, but damn do I despair of them learning anything from this.
Maybe they don't deserve it, but I wouldn't lose any sleep over their deaths. If they had just done this to themselves then maybe I would feel something. But I'm thinking of all the other people who didn't vote for this whose lives have been destroyed by MAGA votes. Maybe one day I will become a better person and forgive, but I'm not there yet.
They're bullies. They're cowards. They're members of the small penis club who have to constantly overcompensate for their shortcomings. And if they can't, they will-and are-burning it all down. They won't stop until they get hit hard in the face (metaphorically) and that hitting must be constant and unrelenting. There is no both sides here. One side is in favor of causing great harm, and the other is not.
They aren't just the dumbest people in the nation who are in charge, they are also the most evil and the most cruel people in the nation. It's quite a toxic combination.
Glad that you included the "faith without works is dead" quote from James, Stephen. If we had a real Fourth estate, the reporters would ask fake Christian Mike Johnson about that. He has the power to do more than to pray about it, but he won't because he's evil and delights in cruelty to others These ghouls have debased faith and prayer to the point that both are meaningless coming from them.

Thank you! You just made my day. ☺️
Thank you!
Agree 100%, from one red-state resident who voted for Harris to another.

Most of those parents will continue voting Republican, because they would rather die in denial and ignorance than ever admitting they were wrong.
Maybe they don't deserve it, but I wouldn't lose any sleep over their deaths. If they had just done this to themselves then maybe I would feel something. Resist!
It’s all overwhelmingly sad.
They aren't just the dumbest people in the nation who are in charge, they are also the most evil and the most cruel people in the nation. It's quite a toxic combination.

Heh accountability and ethical/ideological consistency are for Democrats!
