"(I certainly wonder, but for different, more hopeful reasons.)" Perfect.

Old Soviet joke...

A man goes to a newspaper stand every day, buys a copy of Pravda, glances at the front cover, curses, and throws it away.

After a few weeks, the news seller just has to ask what's going on: "Why do you always look at the cover but never inside?"

"I'm looking for an obituary."

"An obituary? But those are in the back!"

"Oh no, the obituary I'm looking for will be on the front page…”

Many very good points. Perhaps the most important is Trump's psychotic egomania which sees the external world as a primitive extension of himself. When little babies don't get properly soothed, when food and hugs don't appear fast enough to comfort them, they can get stuck in that infantile stage... forever. Anyone who exhibits a separate mind is a psychotic threat to DT. But also, a kind of fascinating alternative: a world where people obey rules other than his regressed impulses. (I'm thinking more of Mamdani than, say, Gorsuch.) You are quite right, though, that the MSM's "coherence" bias is frozen enabling. Why I rarely turn to MSM directly for my "news." ("Mr. President, are you sure you have the right to destroy Alderaan?" "One minute. Tarkin, point that thing at that planet.")

“Hopeful reasons…” 😇

That barely veiled threat was something else. Lawrence Tribe pointed out (not like we needed help) how terrifying dangerous that was. You know that they immediately started flooding the court. Of course when they gave him immunity, they somehow reasoned that he would be prudent with that power. Of course Kagan called it. Does this mean that he can execute any political rival he deems needs it?

I’d say someone get grandpa a pudding cup but that’ll just hit the wall. He’s super pissed and backed into a corner like a rabid animal and now he’s going to get really dangerous.

Who would have known that giving a psychotic narcissist unlimited power and full immunity from consequences for any action he takes would have ended so badly? Not Ivy League law graduates!

I mean, the owners of MSM outlets are the very least on the same team as the pricktator. And as the representative of the unreconstructed he does indeed have the deference in the political and legal systems. This is why after saying something so horrifying as "I can destroy the country" there's no cottage industry of people telling him to resign.

Of course I do point out often—he's not installed into office to be competent...or legal. He's installed to destroy the minorities that the unreconstructed hate. Because the real "government tyranny" is that Democratic administrations enfranchise the minorities that the unreconstructed hate. We were all warned about this man being an unhinged Froot Loop...certainly one that's broken.

The pricktator has lost complete touch with reality and god help us when he does something irreversible—there's plenty of people pledging fealty to him.

I'm just waiting for the day I wake up to the news that ordered a nuclear strike on home soil overnight.

On the plus side, I live real close to Minneapolis so if he decides to hit us here I probably won't feel it.

SethTriggs's avatar

I'll just take it to the face, because I'm not built for apocalyptic survival.

Lucius's avatar

Yup. I've always said that if there's ever a nuclear war I want to be at ground zero of the first strike. Hopefully asleep.

Trump has now put these conservative justices and their families in harm's way, and I'm not talking about not being able to dine at their billionaire buddy's favorite restaurant.

Ironically, these are the same justices that arguably saved him from dying in prison.

This is one of the reasons people never succeed when they think they can satisfy a narcissist.

He's right, there is nothing stopping him and there never has been. He has gotten away with everything, why shouldn't he do whatever he wants? He was breaking the law in the first month of his first term (US Post Office hotel emoluments) and so? The only thing that is going to stop him is cholesterol. Even if dems win in the midterms or in 28, there will be no consequences for this man. Sorry to be a downer.

Yeah, but Biden is old, and hesitated too much before answering questions in the debate back in 2024. And AOC may be young, but she said "um" and "er" when talking at that conference she was at a few weeks ago. /s

Let's face it, the corporate media is broken. As for trump, he's always been broken, but he's getting worse, and no one who can do something about it (hello 25th Amendment!) will do something about it, so our federal government is broken.

Cateck's avatar

I saw what they did with AOC and that was some bullshit. We need to think of new media and ignore the "legacy" media because they have been bought and broken. It's so hard because you have to have trust in who you believe. I don't trust much these days, a couple of people here or on blusky.

Read this before I was actually awake and was trying to figure out how SER was going to tie Ed McMahon into all this.

Stephen Robinson's avatar

Nothing truly reinforces my age more than the fact that I grew up with Carson and McMahon and recall their bits so clearly. I do think someone just 10 years younger than I am would have less of a connection and might even only think of THE SHINING when they hear "Here's Johnny!"

Dina's avatar

Lol, I have to admit, I did too—then as soon as Jack Torrance and "The Shining" were mentioned I thought, "Ah. That's which way we're going."

Your point about the press and Dems acting like everything is normal while blood pours out of the elevators is spot on. I had a friend note that they are trying desperately to hang on to "norms" so they can just go back to business as usual after Trump really is gone, but that dream is long past-those norms are gone for good. Frankly, the American public is over them, too-one thing Biden promised was a "return to normalcy" and voters were having none of it. One positive to take out of all this is that there really will be the opportunity to look at our institutions (smoldering rubble that they may be by then) and redesign them in a much more efficient and responsive fashion. That's my hope, anyway. Time will tell.

Excellent use of Dark Shadows as another example of how all of this planet is a "thing" to Trump , a thing he owns and therefore can do with it as he likes. As Terry Pratchett's Granny Weatherwax said: "And sin, young man, is when you treat people as things."
