I’m more afraid that our country is dead, soon enough, because of the precedents Trump is setting. There’s not much appetite for the Biden-esque norms, and the incentives now are all towards division and domination.
I hated Trump so much I registered as a Republican in 2015 so I could vote against him in the primary in Maryland, and it was mortifying to me, as an older White lady Democratic voter, to show up to vote in my majority Black district (the estimable Elijah Cummings was our Congressman) polling place in a Black neighborhood in Baltimore and have to ask for a Republican ballot. Almost as mortifying as having to cast a vote for John Kasich. Ugh.
"The Democratic Party has more than enough room for pro-democracy center-right voters and politicians, like Romney himself."
Yes, but... they need to understand that "normal" and the "status quo" is part of the problem and part of the reason why their party imploded. The pendulum needs to swing back towards workers so people aren't as inclined to believe lying plutocrat faux populists.
Not just their party either. One thing I think Biden (and his AG) really thought was that they could just go right back to “normalcy” as it was pre-2016. That was a mistake and many voters were having none of it. That ship has sailed for both parties and we are in the midst of figuring out what comes next. Trumpism without Trump cannot stand, but populist voter sentiments can and probably will.
Trump is doubling down — sending militarized agents into our communities, murdering citizens, silencing voters, and handing billionaires giveaways while families struggle. This isn’t just politics. It’s democracy versus dictatorship. And together, we’re choosing democracy.
On March 28, millions of us are rising again to show the world: America has no kings and the power belongs to the people.
The Republican Party was started in the 1850s by former Whigs and others, including Abraham Lincoln. One of their main objectives was abolishing slavery. In less than 200 years, the Republican Party has gone from Lincoln to trump; it's gone from having a soul, to having none.
Sadly they saw that sadopopulism—the tactical nuclear weapon of politics—really can work when you have someone audacious to use it. And of course it helps to have a captive rightwing media human centipede to make sure you can bring along millions of cultists.
> he won two free and fair elections — no conspiracies here, please
Beg to differ, Stephen. I'll just refer you to one of the many, many, analyses of just how wide and deep Russian interference was in the 2016 election: Proof of Collusion: How Trump Betrayed America by Seth Abramson.
Trump is the inevitable end state of the Republican party. He didn't even change much about them. Not on a fundamental policy level. All he did was give them permission to take the mask off and be themselves.
If POTUS can say that about Mueller the I can say I'm OK' that Charlie Kirk got shot in the fucking neck, so there. Right after he was shot I joined in on the the performative mewling 'condemnation' of the murder, but know what? Fuck that...ESPECIALLY since the backlash we feared from the fascists was a total dud. Turns out the right didn't give any more of a fuck about CK than the left did except for how they could use his rotting corpse and his crocodile-tear dead-eyed trophy wife as a prop in their victimhood-martyr fest. He was an opportunity they milked until that teat ran dry then shoved him into a metaphorical unmarked grave...I will show they same amount of respect for him as MAGA republicans did
I'll still maintain my position of "Murder Bad" but today I felt the need to announce my 'unofficial' position.
I am angry today can you tell? I'll be back to normal soon
I wouldn't count out the Republican party just yet, but trumpism is nothing but a cult of personality that is going to collapse as soon as the head of the cult is no longer. It really sucks though, that the GOP has been decimating our public education system for decades, leaving millions of people without the critical thinking skills to recognize that they ARE in a cult.
I also will not say that trump legitimately won either election, way too much funky shit went down.
And now it's time for my annual rewatch of The Devil's Advocate, I love that movie!
The Republican party is dead, which no one should mourn really. They were racist, misogynistic, anti worker and imperialist. That leaves a lot of the old Republican guard-the insufferable Mitt Romney included-wandering the desert. But a huge mistake made by both Hillary Clinton and Kamala Harris was assuming most of these guys were ripe for picking *as Democrats*, and that was fatal IMO. The Romneys and Cheneys of the world may despise Trumpism, but they flatly hate Democrats more. That is shocking and uncomfortable but it's a truth Dems seem unable to come to terms with and worse, do anything about.

"Whoever prevails will still lead a party that’s totally hostile to liberal democracy." Yup. Nailed it. Sadly.

If only we all did that in every state! We might have avoided all this.

I will happily help dig their grave
They're digging their own, really, but they're not quite dead yet.
let me know how I can help it along!
