Thanks Stephen. You are one of exactly 2 male Stackers whom I trust to get it right about women.
All this pearl clutching about women over 65: somebody's not doing the math! We are the ones who created the second wave of feminism. Our mothers, who were born about the time women got the right to vote, are not today's "old ladies". They are gone now. Time has passed. We fought to enshrine the right to abortion in the first place, fought for women's rights to play sports, go to medical school, earn a living. We started rape crisis centers and domestic violence shelters from nothing, we brought the topic of sexual abuse of children out of the void and into the discourse, we reshaped almost everything about our society, and we took a lot of crap and worked our butts off to do it. What did they think, we've been in the kitchen making pies the last 2 years? We have been organizing. We are the core of the Democratic grassroots army that's about to deliver a Harris victory.
Roe v. Wade was decided 5 days after I turned 12, and a few months before I had my first period. I went through menopause 10 years ago, so all of my reproductive life, I had control over my own body and quite frankly, took it for granted. Dobbs changed all of that over two years ago. I voted for Harris because my daughters deserve to have control over their own bodies, as does my granddaughter, who will be born in February, and for all women of the present and of the future. The repubs, the pollsters (except Selzer) and the media are going to find out just how angry we women are, even those of us who are postmenopausal.
Thanks for the little bite of sugar in the form of Jed Bartlett.
In case anyone wants to read a very short article about how the Catholic Church's teaching on abortion is only from the year 1869, and that abortion before "ensoulment" was perfectly fine with God, here's a link to an Irish Times article from 2013.
The one time that abortion is mentioned in the Bible, is when a married woman is accused of adultery. The priest gives her a potion - if she aborts, she's guilty, if she doesn't, she's innocent. Gruesome, but clearly the OT isn't against abortion. But what about the NT? Nothing about it, even Paul doesn't care one way or the other. Jesus talked about helping those in need, healed the sick, and turned water into wine, but never, ever mentioned abortion, nor did his cousin John, who was big on calling out sin. So why are some Christians against abortion and hanging what they call godliness on being antiabortion? They want to control women is why, but it has nothing to do with God, or Jesus, or helping the needy.
If one believes that we are given free will by God, it follows that we do not take from another that what God has given.
Wishing you held power over your brothers and sisters is not godly.
And of course (I think I read it on Wonkette) To lay claim to the voice of those not born is the ultimate in hubris- for they can not tell you yes or no.
I was raised by devout Christians and while I am an athiest, I get quite angry watching these hypocrites treat the poor, the imprisoned, those who have unmet basic life needs, as "lesser than" themselves. These are not Christians. They are vile, self serving dullards without sympathy or care for ther fellow humans, the animals they eat, the air they breathe, or the ground they walk on.
I get on pretty well with Christians who don't buy into "Prosperity Gospel" and "Dominion" over the planet. You know, the ones feeding people. I like them just fine and am happy to work side by side with them.
We're also going to see, because Hillary Clinton also had Murc's Law against her. Every single day out of the Republicans lately has been an insult, against women. But we're going to see how it all shakes out...probably as early as tonight. Let's see if the trends continue.
I do think there's also a lot of institutional bias in polling that is going to also induce these people to stick their fingers in their ears and ignore what women are telling them. Of course it works this way since Democrats won't make their lives hell.
Last night my friend said that she thought PAB would win citing the overwhelming numbers of GQP in Calaveras County where we have our house. We’re registered to vote in the city which is predominantly blue. I pointed out the obvious that there will be a lot of women registered red who will vote blue purely because telling us they know better about our bodies than we do is very dangerous and a portent of other basic rights being taken away.
They’ve really gone too far and I hope we women prove that.
We listened to Harris last speech in Philly last night. The man said that he really needed to hear her uplifting message since he was filled with existential dread. It was a soothing balm for the psyche.
Let’s go ladies! Thank you to all you wonderful men out there who love us and show us the true meaning of protection.
Abortion or lack thereof is a priority because the right wing nut brigade made it so. When they lose heavily in this election there can be no wondering why. Taking away health care is not a winning proposition.
The pundits and polls are also all about how the economy matters most. While there are very real issues with price gouging and wealth inequality and the like, abortion is also fundamentally an economic issue. The right to an abortion (or the lack thereof) directly impacts the financial situations of women.
>>It’s weird that anyone would embrace a history of capitalist exploitation and black lung as their “heritage.”<<
Stephen, as a SC native, you undoubtedly know how lots of Southerners (especially men) are about their regional and familial heritage. I remember as a child seeing license plates featuring an old hillbilly with his rifle and rebel flag saying ‘Hell No, I Ain’t Forgettin’!’ To vote against one’s “heritage” means a betrayal of their grandpappies, who worked hard in the coal mine or on the farm to put food on the table and a non-leaky roof over their heads. It’s in the blood, perhaps particularly here in the Bible Belt, and very difficult to overcome.
>> Women voters are speaking loud and clear, but it’s as if no one listens unless you’re a man or a lump of coal.<<
Ain’t that the truth.
Thank you, Stephen, and tonight, may the best woman win.
I'm not from the South so I don't know the history. My understanding is that a lot of those grandpappies revered FDR and to a lesser extent Kennedy. Was that just Democrats in the South coasting because they hadn't become Republicans yet?
It wasn't Hillary or "clean energy" that put that coal miner out of work, it was the mine owners who switched from underground mining to moutaintop removal and open pit mining. There are coal mines today that are run with only a handful of employees, because the trucks and excavators are all robotic, and the 'miner' sits up top in an office watching computer screens. A relative handful of people to maintain the robots and probably an equal number of security guards are it.
Excellent point, Stephen. I definitely haven't heard any women claiming a lack of access to abortion as their "way of life." There may be a few who decry the culture changing (trans rights etc.) but they're not claiming they want less freedom.
But but giving up reproductive freedom and democracy while imposing lots of tariffs will bring down the price of bacon. Because reasons!

We might be invisible but we are real.
You're welcome, America!
Every single word of this. Thank you!

I think the Dobbs vote is pivotal.
Deep breaths everyone, carry a big ballot.

Great article.
The Dobbs effect is going to "surprise" a lot of pundits and media. They will be so amazed! Rs will rue the day..

Here's a very good video that explains it better than I could: https://www.instagram.com/iampoliticsgirl/reel/CkZagozrXmN/
You did just fine. Yeah, I love Politics Girl.

Lots of Southern FDR supporters turned into Dixiecrats and then went Republican when JFK and LBJ started legally recognizing Blacks as human beings.
What changed for southern Democrats was the passage of the Civil Rights Act and Voting Rights Act. Racism turned them into Republicans.
Thanks Karen. I thought the Southern Strategy ™ was involved somehow.
Yr periodic reminder that the peak of coal-mining employment was in 1922, and it had declined, sometimes precipiously, ever since.

Of course, being MAGA, the message they'll take away if they lose is, "We gotta stop women and minorities from voting!"

Abortion will always be a fact of life, anyway. The question is if it will remain legal, safe, and rare, as Bubba Clinton put it.
As a woman, I approve this message
