I love all things 90s and Meg Ryan, and looking back at this flick it's clear it was prophetic in a lot of ways-the influence of the internet on our romantic lives (yours truly met my husband in an online discussion forum) as well as the loss of many independent businesses to huge corporations (Amazon wasn't a thing then, but Fox Books is a reasonable stand in). It never really made sense to me that she would fall for the guy out to ruin her (Him: "It's not personal!" Her: "It is to me!") no matter how charmingly Tom Hanks he was! But it did unwittingly give us a glimpse of the world very soon to come, and maybe we should have taken more heed...

I remember the movie - went to see it with my mother, who had read that it was a remake of one of her favorite movies, "The Shop Around the Corner." She liked "You've Got Mail," but not as much as "The Shop Around the Corner," which she loved so much, that she got it on DVD - the TCM version, which includes three other Holiday movies - "Christmas in Connecticut" with Barbara Stanwyck, "A Christmas Carol," and "It Happened of 5th Avenue." When she died, I inherited that DVD set, and have grown to love those movies too. As for "You've Got Mail," I enjoyed it then, and now, if I watched it again, would enjoy it as a snapshot NYC in the 1990s.
